What's your preferred choice of paying for a car when you buy it privately or with a dealer? I bought my last one with cash but, to be honest, the way the bank dealt with giving me £6K in cash scared me and I would probably avoid doing it again. Especially since the next purchase will probably be for more than that amount.

How do you pay for your cars and how much?

Escort Cavalier Astra Escort = Cash
Mondeo = Given
Alfa = Credit
Mazda 6 = BCA = debit card
Honda Prelude = Cash
Honda Accord = Cash
Mazda 6 = Cheque
Zafira = Cheque

Debit card if a dealer.

Cash under 10k private.

Bank draught over 10k unless they want to sell it cheaper for cash, then i dont care how much cash and break the 10k cash limit.

Fiesta - £700 cash
Focus - £12k debit card

Would bank transfer if it was a private car, over a grand, from a dealers likely debit card.

Bank transfer, didn't fancy going on the bus with £2.4k in cash and it was much easier. Did it using their PC (private sale) and online banking so they could see me do it, much better than cheques, especially now with FPS

Trade = Credit card
Private = Paypal if possible, else Bank transfer

Security ***

EDIT: what the hell O.o I think the language filter is getting a bit overzealous lol

pretty much always done cash when buying. its the easiest way to hand over keys in return for cash, CHAPS always means the buyer has the cash before you have the keys.

BACs, did the transfer whilst they watched.

bacs is pretty much bank transfer right?

done bank transfers for the last three

when GF sold her fester, the buyer insisted on calling her bank and telling them to send the money to the sellers account etc. that took a day when a transfer on line would have been instant in my experience

Well it can take 3 days but pretty much can't stop it once it's requested.

First car was 4k and I used a bankers draft (back in the days when people still trusted them not to be fakes), not spent anywhere near that much since so it's pretty much always been cash.

Bacs always credits on the third day, and can be stopped with hassle but will not proceed if funds are not available, the funds check is not done the day you make the payment. Bacs payments can only be trusted once the funds reach your account on the third day.
