On ebay I have found a damaged devils canyon cpu. I say damaged the box looks taty on the corners and the fan is damaged. What do you think the likely hood is the cpu will still work? For all I care the box and fan can go in the bin...

Now I've had cpus thrown in draws for years with other metals and objects and I've taken them out and they have still worked perfectly. I may be a little nieve but for all the stuff crammed into these they still seem really tuff.

Looking at the pictures the cpu is still sat in its plastic holder the holder looks good not damaged and the cpu looks to have no obvious damage.

Should I risk a buy? How much would you risk

There is no risk providing it is not listed as For parts or not working.

If it is then you waive your right to a return/refund and I wouldn't bother.

That's exactly how it's listed, like just about everything else that seller sells. They always list things begining with "As part of a bulk lot of customer returns we are handling on behalf of a large electrical on-line retailer" and I really hate that approach to selling. They have got 99.9% positive feedback but I am not sure what would happen if this goes for £100+ and then it doesn't work. They could always turn around and state that it was listed as "For parts or not working" and get out of refunding. Personally I wouldn't touch it.

It is in fact listed as parts not working. But perhaps this is down to the fan/heatsink. ... I think the add says cpu not tested

Ah so you've found it buddy?

The cpu is in fact for another build for the house. Just trying not to spend a fortune. But still get a good pc. I guess as the saying goes buy cheap buy twice

its always a risk buying processors when they state the above.

what you have to consider is if your ok to loose the money you would spend on it but then have to pay for another CPU on top for the build.
