Hi guys pretty new here - so first of all thanks for all ** advice already (currently planning first rig and have been lurking here for a while....)

Anyone think its possible, or advisable to buy things across from america to take advantage of cheaper hardware and the current strong pound/weak dollar?

cheers

Problems are: warranty and getting hit by customs.

Also it doesnt particulary work with low cost items. More epensive items though thing that cost around £400-500 here you can make a large saving if you dont get hit by customs and want to take the risk with the warranty etc.

Technology Tax in UK, for any electrical goods, needs to be marked as GIFT and value of £40 max avoid this, even mark as RMA replacement.

I get a buddy in USA to buy some hard to get items from Newegg then send to me as gift.

As of warrenty, some manu's have worldwide so not matter where you bought it from you can send back to any country.

as soon as i posted this i was struck with the fear that it counts as competitor discussion - many apologies to admins if this is so!?

cheers for the advice tho guys - something to think about. for my first rig tho im pretty keen to get decent warranty cover so would have to look carefully at how that worked out...

You might get stung or you might not. Out of the 5 or so international parcels I have had this year only one has been stopped at customs. It was clearly marked GIFT and under the $40 (?) threshold. Postage is normally about $16.

The charge when they do stop it is an £8 handling fee + standard VAT.

Its a gamble, but a good one. You always win, if it works out the same price (or less) after £8 + VAT. Anything else you might as well get from the UK, and quicker.
