Buying iPhone 3G?

I'm going to Canada for 8 months in late July. I want to buy the new iPhone, and then unlock it so that I can use a PAYG Canadian SIM while I'm out there (and then use it when I got back obviously). Will the iPhone work out in the states (eg. old phones needed to be tri-band or something), because I bloody hope it does!

I think the iphone is out in the states, but i don't think they are releasing it on PAYG over there, and I think the States contract on AT&T is 24 months !!!

Not sure about Candian thou.

I'd just buy a crappy phone out there on PAYG and swap the SIM into the iPhone. I mean, I have to buy one anyway so it doesn't bother me.

As for unlocking, I'll be taking my Laptop with me, so when the unlock program arrives I'll be able to unlock. Cheers for the info that it works, that's another + point on my "Should I/Shouldn't I" list.

Given that I've seen the high standard of apps on installer.app on my ipod touch, I am definately getting the iPhone v2 as I never bought the v1, price/contract isn't an issue.

The majority of current apps on installer.app won't work on v2. It remains to be seen which ones will be updated, and which ones get updated and levy a charge via appstore.

I reckon only a few apps will remain in Installer.

I think most will transfer across to the app store. Inroads into the un-jailbroken phones and also can charge for it.

Well a lot of the good apps are background apps, which don't abide by the SDK er rules so they won't be on the store. For example the superb Intelliscreen app - I can't live without that on my touch now but since it's a background running app...

I'll probably keep my iPhone for the Apple store, and continue to use my Touch for third party apps. Not too sure yet, especially if the v2 actually has better audio quality over the pathetic sounding touch.

Its a quad band phone so in theory it should work in America and Canada. Dont know what the deal is over in Canada but im pretty certain its going to be released sometime in July over there. Im going to have to ask my brother if hes heard anything but i imagine that they will be sold with a contract only unless you pick up one off Ebay. As for the unlocking issue...i dont think anyone really knows what the deal is with unlocking...i havent heard anything about it so it could be some time off before unlocked iphone 3gs are out.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they released the pay and go at a price between £250-£300. They will make all their money on the internet charges. At the moment people who have a pay ang go iPhone v1 either sign up to a simplicity, or else get charged £3 a MB using the internet when on their network. Either way they make money.

Vodafone italy has it listed at around £400 for the 8G version.

So what are the odds on the PAYG iPhone on O2 being unlocked?

Quite high I would suspect. The initial price is what worries me.

Can't really find out until the Devs have the iPhone in their hands. I guess we will have to wait until after release to see if an unlock solution is avaliable.

After the initial "ooh shiny", probably not.

Improved battery life... fine okay, but currently I'm in the routine of just docking it after I get in from work. Not a problem.

Improved speakers... not bothered.

3G. A good addition but generally I only use EDGE to download my text emails and check facebook. It's fast enough for what I need. Yes, sitting there waiting for web pages to load brings back painful memories of 28k, but it's not exactly blazing fast on wifi either. A lot of the time taken is rendering the page too.

GPS. Now, a personal sat-nav is cool. However the times when I might NEED a GPS signal is when I'm out walking in the mountains, and I don't like taking expensive breakable gadgets with me. However, I can foresee 3rd party apps going mental with GPS, tracking your mates in realtime etc. I'd feel like Jack Bauer. GPS is something I'm actually excited about. Up-to-date weather forecast updated automatically. Traffic updates. Where is the nearest drinking hole/public toilet. An app that pulls cinema listings from a 1-mile radius. Tracking the b****** whole stole your iPhone 3G. The list is endless.

I'll wait for the iPhone v3.0 however.
