My mate went to NY a few days ago. I want him to buy something for me like a Macbook Air or iPad or Camera - whatever, I need a few things really but can only pick one.

If I get a Macbook Pro or Macbook Air from the US, will I be able to get AppleCare here in the UK?
If I get an iPad with the simcard in the US, will it be usable in the UK?

If all that fails just might get him to get me a Canon 6D or something. Did you have experiences with imports like that?

With Apple Care you can just enter the serial and buy it, however you will have a US keyboard of course.

I'm not sure on the iPad, but I believe its exactly the same device.

As for the Canon, only thing to bare in mind is that the warranty will only be valid in the US. If it breaks here and you send it to Canon, you will be charged for repairs.

Don't bother in manhattan as the added city tax makes it pretty much the same as over here, it's actually cheaper here with educational discount! Also the GBP/USD exchange rate is rubbish, sure 6 years ago when it was near $2 a £1 it was worth it, but today just don't bother! Technically he has to declare it on return and pay VAT and import duty, it's unlikely he will get caught but you never know

I got an iPad 3 in the states last year, though I've not registered it for any AppleCare or anything it works just fine; had no issues - though it only worked out to be about £40 cheaper then the UK at the time.

i bought a macbook when i went to new york, i saved about £70 overall.

i think all mac keyboards are the same so you wont have a us keyboard, just a 'mac' one.

just buy a travel power kit so you get the uk plug and away you go.

I've got a US Macbook Air. It has a US keyboard, but so have every other Mac I've used over the last few years. I just map the keyboard to UK layout, as I know where the keys are anyway.

My Apple wireless keyboard does have a UK layout though, so they do make them.

Not that big a fan of the Mac trackpad. It doesn't seem any better than one of my old budget Acer Aspire One in terms of speed and responsiveness. In fact it takes more effort to use it then it did on the Acer.

I did it, but back in the days of £1:€2. You'll get the US keyboard layout, which has the different shaped enter key (superior IMHO) and the alt/shift functions of the "3" key is reversed to the UK. US layout makes Shift+3=# and Alt+3=£.
Warranty is absolutely fine.

I work for a US company and they gave me a macbook when I started and this is the only difference with mine too that I can see.

Obviously OP you'll need some sort of power adapter changer too so that could end up looking a bit messy. I just expensed a UK one :)

Apart from the keyboard being US layout on the macbook, it will be the same (and so will an iPad).

The only thing different is the plug on the charger. But, it may end up costing you more than just buying over here.
