Buying memory for later?

It seems rude not to take advantage of the current DDR3 memory prices. Unfortunately I’m not going to building a machine that could benefit until sometime early next year.

I’m half considering buying some memory now on the assumption that the current prices will prove to be unsustainable. I’m willing to take the gamble on the cost, but don’t won’t to buy something that’ll be definitely out of date before I can use it.

So, is the current generation of 1.5V DDR3 still going to be more-or-less current in another 6-7 months? I’d probably be looking at buying 4 x 4GB.

I bought 8gb of DDR3 when it was on offer at £43 at the weekend. I can't see DDR4 appearing anytime before Q3/4 of 2012. I know my upgrading of my Q6600 will happen before then.

The new Bulldozer platform is using DDR3 and thats just been released. I'll put my money on AMD FM2 platform using DDR3 also.

Also Ivy Bridge will be compatible with existing Socket 1155, and IB won't be out till 2012.

I reckon it should maintain its price for awhile to come, with ivy bridge being quad channel when new quad kits come out they will dominate the high speed, higher price points keeping dual channel ddr3 nice and cheap

Isn't Ivy Bridge going to using the current generation DDR3 memory? Assuming it does then I can't see why the possible availability of quad channel kits (identical to buying two dual channel kits) will have any downward influence on costs.

Personally I’ve decided to risk it and have ordered 16GB of Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey. Even if the worst happens and memory prices half I’ll only be about £40 out of pocket.

I can't see memory getting much cheaper, otherwise they will be giving it away free.

My cunning plan has been to buy 8gb of memory while it's cheap & stock pile it, hoping prices will rise sharply, & I can make a bit of profit.:D

Your not on your own there mate. I did the same and ordered 16gb of HyperX grey, ready for my next build.

I think it's probably the right choice to buy RAM now seeing as they're selling it at near production costs. Soon enough they will have to go up again since companies aren't making much profit at the moment.

I can't speak for Ivy Bridge as I'm not up to speed on that, but I'm fairly convinced that Orochi (Bulldozer 2, so to speak) will run DDR4 as it's supposedly being designed around a new motherboard chipset design - I can only assume it'll be a substantial makeover this time, rather than the slight upgrade that AM3+ has been.

I did what you're thinking about and went for it though. I had 4GB (2x2) and got another 2x2 last week for £23. Hardly bad.

All the easily found published roadmaps have Orochi running DDR3. I don't really follow this sort of thing in great detail (unless I'm about to buy), but Orochi's roadmap date looks too early for DDR4 to be an option.
