I need to buy my own luggage (have always borrowed from friends).
I think I want a hard shell, with 4 rotating wheels.
What brands should I be looking at for good value of money/quality?

Thanks

I assume they'd have good mixed with bad brands? I need to know what to look for really. But thanks, I'll pop down there at the weekend

from what we've seen last year, price tells you a lot. But the fact that you can see it in person, have a look at things like zip quality/shell quality etc really does help. Think I paid £50 for my small one and it's built like a tank.

Well, Samsonite is one of the more popular ones, Away or July if you are a hipster, Rimowa if you have money.

I don't pay attention to brands but rather I pay attention to design, material, pockets, locks and more importantly, WEIGHT.

Lots of smaller airlines have a 10kg or even 7kg carry on. They are all various sizes, not standardised. You need to look that up then get one that fits the smallest one just in case.

I had one that has an external compartment for laptops which was handy when I want to take it out at the airport to use or on the flight from overhead instead of having to open up the case.

I like hardshell now, but the problem with most hardshell is they do the 50/50 opening, splitting it in half, making packing single large object souveniers difficult if you need to. Generally not a problem.

TSA locks would be handy but not end of the world as I can use my own.

But it has to be under 3kg, 2kg is what I aim for in a carry on. The new PeakDesign one is 4kg...which is insane.

And get a random colour, just in case it need to be checked in so you can spot it easily when it comes back on the carousel.

£50 TK Maxx special, where I have always gone. But I did blow £75 on a Versace one in TK Maxx once! (breaks some of the rules above, black, no lock, soft shell lol)

For check in, hard shell definitely. I got mine in Singapore...cheap like £50 too from a department store.

Samsonite is one of the best brands but they aren't cheap. They are light and hard wearing though and they give you a decent warranty. I actually took mine to one of their shops out of warranty and they fixed it for free for me.

American Tourister is owned by Samsonite but is cheaper and they are also pretty good and they're sold in the Samsonite shops.

Thread here for previous discussion:

I actually have a big backpack that I use now. Too many places I've been where wheels are just awkward (bumpy pavements etc)

i cant remember the make of mine, although i have dragged it along with me in the past 1 year , in 3 different countries, one of which was athens, full of networking kit, cables, cable management , varous other bits, clothes also stockholm, and prague,

its still going strong

Dont get a cheap one just find a mid range one, no need to spend a huge sum on one

Slippy path..
I have 5 of different size and styles not including overnight bags, hold alls, suit carriers, rucksacks…

I have a Tripp one too.. it’s lasted the test of time..

Rather than go for brand, OP should get the case that matches their scenario.

My Tripp one is for 2 weeks plus travel, it’s large and heavy. Where I’m unsure on the weather and need to take a lot.

I have a smaller, I think Amazon brand case that I use for a week travel

I have two others that a roughly the same size 50 litre, one is a light weight one (it luggage), if i’m using public transport, that’s getting taken. The other is a rhino heavy duty case which I tend to use if I’m driving somewhere where I need to take a lot of tech, as it has more protection and selection for different size items built in.

I have a small 25 litter eastpak, that’s heavy duty for 2-3 day trips, that can be thrown about in over head luggage, which I normally double up with a suit carrier.

We’ve got some from American Tourister which have been good - I really like the fun colours they come in.

Whatever you get, try to ensure they are ‘double wheeled’ (two wheels per ‘foot’). They are so much better for manoeuvring than just one wheel per ‘foot’.
