Buying New Road Bike - Suggestions?

Im looking to buy a road bike for my commute into work (around 12 miles). Im looking to purchase one for £400 or less. Two that have caught my eye at the moment are:

Specialized Allez (2010 or 2011)

Carrera Virtuoso - although this seems to be linked to halfords, is it any good?

Are there any other suggestions I should be looking in to, maybe 2nd hand?

The Allez is the one I'd choose for that money, solid bike with decent components.

The 2011 is closer to £500 though, and £400 is already a bit of a stretch. I could potentially get an Allez 2010 for less, is there much difference between the two?
