Buying our own underlay

So local carpet shop is supplying our carpet for upstairs bedrooms and staircase. However they were trying to sell us generic rubbish underlay so we said we'd source our own and to take it off the bill. We were thinking of having some Cloud9 Super Contract 10mm, but the carpet shop are saying it can't be deeper than 9mm. Is thit because of the grippers only supporting that depth or should we just get grippers too? There are underlays all the way up to 12mm so not really sure what they're on about. Anyone familiar and been through the process?

Not really sure what they're on about, 7 years ago i bought that exact same underlay "Cloud 9 Super Contract 10mm Thick Carpet Underlay" with grippers and its just a normal install. Grippers don't really come in thicknesses to match an underlay. Used it on a variety of thickness carpet from 8mm to 14mm. Great underlay btw, still feels great 7 years on. Likely they are just trying to get you to buy their stuff because they want the margins on it or they want to move stock.

I suspect so, I've not spoken to them directly but they've told the wife 8mm ideally and 9mm max as the carpet won't grip correctly otherwise and there will be a bend over the gripper. I can't see anything regarding this online. Other than some deep grippers if you have a really thick underlay or carpet. I think we'll go with the 10mm Cloud9 stuff and just ignore them.

I've not seen carpet gripper come in anything but a standard size. No one lists a height so must be immaterial.

They should be tucking the carpet under skirting board, which implies a bend anyway... :D

I've heard the same from my carpet shop that 9mm was better for the carpet fitment and feel than larger thicknesses. So seems fairly normal

Interesting set of mixed responses. Surely there is an industry standard around this, seems each shop are making up their own definitions of good. Might have to just go with a 9mm Cloud9 or Tredaire rather than the 10mm super contract I was planning on. What a pita

Had similar years ago when I did mine. I can understand where they were coming from though cos one of the carpets does kinda sit a bit strange on edges.

I'd say the grippers bit is rubbish. They're more likely telling you the max height based on the gap at the bottom of your doors. If it's too thick then they have to trim off the bottom which is a load of faff.
