Buying private plate on retention

Im planning on buying a plate from someone, and ive been told its currently on retention.

Ive just been searching around about buying plates on retention and this is what i got

There are two names on a V778,1st is the "Grantee", The grantee is allowed to nominate one other person to be able to assign the registration number to a car in his/her name. This person becomes the "nominee". However it is the "Grantee" that controls the V778 .He or she is the only person that can renew or change nominee on the V778. You will need to contact the grantee to see if they are willing to do this for you..

My plan is to buy the plate, and of corse get the plate on my name/address and still keep it on retention...(is this possable) i dont have a vehicle to assign it to yet.

but im abit confused with this Grantee and Nominee. :confused:

As im paying good money for it, i dont want the seller to have anything to do with the plate anymore

However it is the "Grantee" that controls the V778

???????????? how does that workout? how do i become to grantee so i have total control over the plate, and not the nominee?

can someone please clarify?

Basically Grantee puts your name in certificate and sends off to DVLA making you a nominee costs £25.

Then he receives the cert back with you as Nominee and sends it to you, then you do what you like with it

Will the plate still be on retention? and will i have full rights to the plate (so he is out of the picture now?

If he did that then the person who he bought the plate off of would still have overall rights to the plate

Get a Certificate of entitlement V750 form filled in and sent to the DVLA when you buy the plate, so that you become the new grantee on the retention certificate, giving you full ownership of the plate.

You only really use the nominee part of the form if say you want to put the plate on a lease vehicle, you would still be the grantee on the retention document and the lease company (who own the vehicle) is the nominee

Thanks i think you explained it well here. Ive done more research and its basicly

My name will be recorded as the 'Nominee' on a retention certificate bought from the seller. the seller will be the 'Grantee'

As a nominee i can still hold the certificate indefinitely, but all renewals and changes in names on the certificate will have to be done through the 'Grantee' .

Until the registration is assigned to a car, the 'Grantee' will be the 'legal' keeper of the registration.

I will become the 'Grantee' once the registration is assigned to my vehicle - and if the registration is subsequently transferred off onto 'retention' again I will be the 'Grantee'.

Do you agree with the above?

Yeah ignore my last post its late and I'm tired. You are right, I thought you could change the grantee name straight away but I've looked into it a bit more and it doesn't seem like you can if the plate has been previously assigned to a vehicle.

As said current owner puts you as the nominee and you technically don't have fully rights to the plate until it is put on your vehicle.
