Buying the same car twice...anyone else?

So last September, for £14k I bought a 59' 320d coupe SE Highline Manual with 26k on the clock and all was well with the world.

Alas, months on and my commute now requires me to drive 100 miles to and from Reading twice a week and I'm beginning to loathe the manual transmission sitting on the car park, I mean motorway, that is the M25.

So I started looking at auto's, Mercs in fact, and whilst nice cars - something just didn't feel right driving a Merc in my 20's (yes I know stupid stereotype)...that and the Merc sales force are all difficult and would not stop trying to get me jump on a finance plan.

After a week of pondering I realised that all I really wanted was my coupe but in an auto....

....So yesterday I traded my car in (£13K) bought an 11' 320d M Sport, Auto, 19k on the clock (£19k) ... few added options heated seats, M Sport flappy paddle box.

Now whilst I am happy with my purchase, I feel a little weird buying the same car twice and was wondering if anybody else has gone down a similar route in the past?

I have done it, I bought a 335i, sold it with plans to buy something else but could not find anything that was better for the same money and so bought another 335i. I did this again a couple of times after that.

I had a 2002 Mondeo 2.0 TDCi Zetec and chopped it in for a 6 month old 2005 ST TDCi.

Didn't feel weird at all, the Mondeo did everything I needed it to do well and I was doing a lot of miles so I upgraded to the top of the range diesel model.

I'd probably have gone for a 6 cylinder car in your position though. I'd want more power to compensate for the auto box.

Wrote my first Rover off, went out and bought another one. Doesn't hurt if you like the car, especially if it's a newer, more premium car IMO.

I wrote off my E39 530i Sport last year, and recently bought the wife a 525i Sport Touring to help compensate. I missed my 530i very much (still do), and would buy another in a heartbeat if the opportunity arose.

My GFs step mum traded in a 307 petrol for a 307 diesel of the same age and same mileage because "its only £35 a year to tax"

But it cost her £3k to make the swap

So you paid £6k to change to pretty much exactly the same car only with an autobox? Did you not sit in the car and wonder where the £6k was actually going before you signed on the dotted line :p

In your sitation I think it would have been worth going for an F30 320d Auto instead - it may have cost evre so slightly more but it's at least a completely new car not exactly the car as you had before but with a different bodykit and a different number on the plate.

when I first started driving I wanted a GTI-6 badly, obviously I couldn't afford to buy/run/insure one so I bought a 1.4 base spec 306 which got written off after 3 months.
I went out and bought a 1.6 306 same age ever so slight better spec (electric windows and foglights :p)

Yep, sold my S3 to buy a B5 S4 but the sale never happened and I couldn't find one I liked at the time so purchased another S3, exactly the same model just every option ticked and stupidly low mileage.

Was meant to be a stop gap but I still have it and for some reason can't let it go...

I can completely understand the desire to change from manual to auto, as I've had enough as well and I'm looking for a nice auto to waft around in.

However that is relatively substantial amount to pay to essentially swap transmission [if that was the entire motive for changing the car].

Also, I know it's entirely subjective, but the E-Class Coupe is stunning... It certainly doesn't portray an old man look either exterior or interior. One of the nicest looking [common] cars around in my opinion.

Nearly 10 years ago now My Dad bought an N reg Nissan Almera in green for his commute and for my older brother to learn in. He moved out, and took the car with him.

Fast forward to 2007 or so and my Dad bought an N reg Nissan Almera, in red this time, for his commute and for me to learn to drive in. This second Almera has alloy wheels though ;) We split the cost of a Primera for him to drive, so now the Red alerma is mine. When my brother comes home for a weekend, we have the 2 almeras and a Primera GT of the same era on the drive...

:p

Was thinking that a little...but framed it differently in my head... basically paid 14 for mine last year got 13 back.... new car "would have cost that anyway"(up for 20,995)... so if I got the price down I would go for it.

Did look at the E Coupe and it is gorgeous but all the running costs on the 350CDI were a killer compared to the 320d. (doing 15k a year)

Also wanted a coupe rather than saloon... ah well, done now and technically works out financially.

:D

The running costs on a 20k 320d will be almost as big, it's getting replaced this year so what you save in fuel you will pay in depreciation anyway :p

I haven't, but I would.

Used to have an Integra DC2 with a whole host of Mugen parts. What an absolute weapon that was on the B roads to Scotland from Newcastle, had to sell it with the arrival of my daughter but if I won the lottery it'd still be one of the cars in my garage.
