I've just cancelled my gym membership at 2 and a half years. It's a budget gym, very cheap for the area but it just became too overcrowded. Bicep boys taking up all the space and they've systematically been making the weights section smaller and machines area bigger. Anyway, I'm not here to moan.

Since I most certainly aren't going to stop training, I'm now going to grab some free weights to use at home. Saw some on Jungle River website (dunno if we can't mention that or something) and the price is fair. Don't really have a budget, I'll just buy what I need. One time cost anyway. So far I've got.

EZ bar
Dumbell bars
barbells to the tune of 50kg
two spinlocks for each bar.
2 x 15kg dumbells.
protective barbell pad (for squats, though it's going to be quite light squats due to not being able to drop the bar if needed - my floor will collapse)
20kg kettlebell
pushups stands (have them anyway).

what else? Or what on the list don't I need?

I've been paying £240 a year to go to my gym. Even if I spend that on equipment today, I'll be in profit in 13 months time!

what gym did you go to? :)

the thing with me is, i've got a bench, bar, dumbells etc at home but i just don't use them.. when i go to gym i simply have nothing better to do just to workout.

so if you got the motivation to workout at home then cool but i know a lot of people are same like me and simply can't be bothered to workout at home and NEED to go to gym.

its summer so all the bicep boys are running to gym expecting to build a 12 pack in 2weeks ;) when it gets colder the use will drop again and only the regulars will be around.

The Gym in West Hampstead. Due to my work hours, I can really only regularly make it in peak hour, and it's packed. I've not really used the weights section for a long time due to it being always busy.

I know I have the discipline to train at home, just need the gear.

What is wrong with your floor?

What you need:

- 18mm ply board... £20...
- Protective matting... £20-60 depending on what you're after...
- Squat stands... £60...
- Olympic bar and cast weights... £2/300 depending...
- Dumbell handles and collars... £50...
- Bench... £80...

You DON'T need:

- EZ curl bar;
- Individual barbells;
- Kettlebell.

Unless, of course, you just want to do beach weights, which looks to be the case, anyway...?

It's not beach weights, it's just what I'm able to lift with strict form and 10+ rugby injuries. I never squat more than 100kg these days anyway. I'm long over ego lifting hence the light weights

I'm taking your suggestions into account. If I move the sofa out of the spare room (gaming room), I can fit a bench.

If that's the case, then fair dos...

However (without knowing your injury history), you'd be severely limiting yourself without a decent bar and some decent weights.

It's just a question of being creative. :)

twice broken collar bone. Dislocated knee, broken ribs and ankle. And a few other bumps and nicks that bothers me sometimes. Though none of it is too restricting, but I'm careful anyway.

I've added the bench to the list and another 50kg.

Ego lifting != heavy lifting.

If you have injuries that stop you squatting, then fair enough, but most people can still squat if form is good.

It stops me when it's cold and I have a niggling knee issue. I just ignore it most of the time and it seems to hold pretty well. But as I said above, I'm careful
