Hey guys I am looking into buying windows 7 for my new PC build. I was looking at an OEM version of 64 bit home premium but this is still about £65 at the cheapest. I was doing some more searching and found this:

Does this actually work? I have found a Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit upgrade version for £35. This is much cheaper but of course I do not already have an OS so was wondering if the above article would work?

Thanks guys

If you don't have a OS, then it is not going to work, as you will need your COD from the operating OS your upgrading from. Again, You said you haven't got a OS, then I would recommend you buy a full copy from OcUK, as you won't get it cheaper from the MS web site.

the upgrade will only work if u have a operating system already on the hard drive , what is there to upgrade if there isnt a os already on there after all but if u do have windows 7 home premium even as a trial version you maybe able to uprgade from that correct me if im rong

you dont need the OS installed, just an OS license key (and possibly cd) from what i remember from XP-Vista upgrades, been a while since i did one though.

For the difference, about 30 quid, why mess about with something that is key to your use of the PC. In hardware terms you would probably not quibble at £30 on the cost of a PC so why does everyone think that an OS is different.

if you are that worried about keeping costs down, look on the well known auction site, there are plenty there to be had for under £30. or just go linux.

I have done a clean install with upgrade version before. It does work, however it is only legal if you own a legit copy of Windows, not necessarily on that PC.

You just don't put in the product key when it asks you for it, then you change a registry value and it will allow you to validate Windows with the upgrade license.
