Someone in my family was recently given an old macbook but they need it to run windows and gave me the computer to sort it out.

Only thing is i just wanted to check if there are any specifics i need to know in terms of the version of windows i need to buy, like home premium, ultimate etc.

I got stung before when i built my dual core machine, as i got home premium then found out it can only recognise one core and had to buy ultimate in the end, so i'm just trying to avoid a situation like that.

Thanks.

Home premium only sees one core? 0_o

I'd ask in the Windows subforum about that, it doesn't sound right.

I've had home premium on a Mac Mini, Mac Pro and iMac, without issue.

from wikipedia.

Windows Vista Home Premium
Containing all features from Home Basic, this edition also supports additional features aimed for the home market segment, such as support for HDTV and DVD-authoring. It also includes games, support for mobile and tablet PCs, for network projectors, for touchscreens, and for auxiliary displays (via Windows SideShow), and a utility to schedule backups. Home Premium supports 10 simultaneous SMB peer-network connections (compared to 5 in Home Basic).[11] The version of Meeting Space included also allows for interaction (in Home Basic, one may only view meetings). This edition has functionality comparable to that of Windows XP Media Center Edition. Like Home Basic, it supports only one physical CPU, but multiple cores.[7] 64-bit Home Premium supports up to 16 GB of RAM.[8]

Windows 7 Also supports multi core.

Quick answer.
Both windows vista and windows 7 home premium support multi core.

Sorry i got my wording wrong, it was two physical cpus, both quad core, therefore it only used one and i had to upgrade. Though that was just an example, the windows i want to buy now is for a macbook, but just wanted to check there wasnt anything daft that meant i had to buy a specific version of windows.

Oh and while i'm on it, for a macbook would it be the 32 or 64x i would need or does it matter if it has less than 3gb ram anyway?
