Can anyone answer this for me. My Dell P1130 21" CRT buzzes when I maximise a web page. Minimise it and it's fine. No buzzing. It's not loud. It's just the pitch which is annoying. Happens at all resolutions, all refresh rates. Background colour is irreleveant. It starting to drive me nuts, and am thinking of buying a VX922 LCD, but then am wondering if the power brick is built into this screen, won't it buzz or whine too, like the Dell 2405FPW. I guess I am very sensitive to these things.

Shame to see no-one bothering to help with CRT problems anymore. :(

If it definitely coming from the monitor (ie. not speakers next to if or anything silly like that) then I would suspect the noise to be coming from a coil inside the crt resonating.

A good local TV repair shop may be able to help. Sometimes after you have found the coil making the noise you can cover it in epoxy resin to stop the oscillation.

To reassure you though, most TFT's with inbuilt power supplies are totally silent, like my Dell 2005fpw.

EDIT: The only thing I am concerned with regarding the diagnosis is that usually displayed colours etc. do affect the noise in some way. Not always though.

Thanks for the help. It's definitely the monitor. There is a low buzzing noise coming from the casing on the top of the monitor all the time. I think this is normal and you can hardly hear it. But if you maximise a window with a dark screen, it kicks up a notch and the pitch raises enough to be irritating. I wonder has it something to do with power regulation, as I seem to remember years ago reading reviews of crt's which used buzz if the power regulation was poor showing full screen windows, usually white.

<edit>The buzzing is actually coming from deep inside the casing. I can hear it thru the side vents on either side. It's a kind of electrical buzzing. But when you maximise a web page, the pitch is raised slightly.</edit>

<edit> More analysis...the buzzing is particularly bad on overclockers homepage !! Most sites, you can't even hear it. But if you scroll down slightly on the site the buzzing drops. It also more or less gos away on the forums or isn't as high pitched. Definitely colour related I think </edit>

<edit> Now this is weird...say on the OcUK forums page where the buzzing is hardly noticeable - if you click the restore down icon on the top right corner of the window which basically reduces the size of the window so it doesn't fill the screen - then the buzzing returns big time. I think I will buy an LCD and take my chances with dead pixels </edit>

I've definitely seen problems like this before with previous CRTs (although not with my current one), where having a particular colour on the screen can make them buzz more (white in particular). Think I've seen CRT TVs do it to. So it's not rare.

Maybe it's full of dust. You could try blowing some air through the vents. Don't open it up unless you know what you're doing though cause apparently, touching the wrong parts inside can give you a fatal electric shock.
