Bye Bye Game!

Popped into Game in Cheltenham today, the first time I've been in one of their shops for years.

Nothing in there even worth considering. Their idea of Spring Clearout Sales leave a lot to be desired.

Can't even find anything on the website to use up my points on. Haven't set foot in the store in town for over 2 years and cba doing either.

Thanks Pestilence, although a different branch, gives us an idea about what theyre offering.

Well, just back and bought nothing at all. Sales are a total waste of space.

The best deal that I noticed in Game was TOO HUMAN, X360 preowned for £1.98 (a good game in my opinion - almost bought it to replace the copy I traded in yonks ago). Gamestation was a little better, DUNGEON SIEGE 3 for around £3, DARKSIDERS for £5. In terms of hardware, pre-owned PSP 1000 (phat) is £29.99, and pre-owned PS3 phat 80GB £99.99, 120GB £129.99.

Pre-owned Wii also cheap as chips, but can't remember exactly the price.

Wasn't even worth looking at the PC section. Pretty much everything in there can be found cheaper online via digital download or snail mail delivery.

So yeah, it's not an amazing sale or anything, and characteristically stubborn of the franchise(s) even as they go down the pan.

Can't wait for the 'Asda/Tesco/anyothershopyoucaretomention' don't stock any games other than the popular ones or new releases so I can't buy anything without going online anymore!' Thread.

Wouldn't be any different from how it is now. Unless you want pre-owned games, they only stock chart releases new anyway. Everything else is pre-owned.

I think the choice in pre owned titles has killed off major retailers like game, if I want a title now I simply mooch around car boots / cex / market stalls. I'm happy to wait for a title for a few weeks after launch for prices to drop. Shops such as cex can rely on ripping people off on other products such as phones, tablets etc. That's before considering things like the mm or ebay.

Gf bought mw3 for her son for the ps3 and paid something like £45, I told her to hold out but noooo. I waited another 9 weeks and got it for £29. Buyers on the whole have become much more savvy. I'm sorry for the staff, but had I worked at game or gs id have jumped ship months ago, we knew it was coming, they surely must have.

If you had waited even longer you could have got it for less!

Games problem is they stood still in time for too long and got left in the past, obvious candidate being the pricing policy.

I will say they were rock solid for pre-orders (for the most part). I always liked the way if I ever had a problem with a purchase, I simply popped into the local shop when out and about and got it sorted without hassle usually (a lot harder with steam, amazon, and EA is a whole different kettle of fish)

Final nail in the coffin IMO is the big gap between Game and its own customer support which was exposed and laid bare for all to see when Origin/EA withdrew its March releases from the retailer

You had people that had preordered months in advance being lied to about the status of their preorders and that it was on its way so there was no need to cancel (even tho it had been published near enough everywhere to the contrary)

They didn't try nearly enough to prevent the situation from happenning

where will I buy my terrible simulation games now??? You could always rely on game not stocking a popular title, but being able to pick up a copy of Trowel Simulator 2012 instead..

I was in GAME last weekend and they had shedloads of weird and bizarre 'simulator' titles on the '3 for £10' shelf. Oil Rig simulator jumped out at me in particular.

Unfortunately another case of a highstreet business not keeping up with the times. The top management has repeatedly shown a complete lack of understanding of the market with the prices, their approach to digital distribution (as demonstrated with their spat with Steam) and latest episode with EA.

It's sad that people will lose their jobs but this may give a chance for some smaller or completely new businesses to come forward and fill the gap unless that is Gamestop make a bid and take over.

When/If they close you'll get lots of small family owned game shops popping up around the country buying & trading games like there always used to be.

No you won't, quite the opposite in fact. If a large company with a previously large buying/credit facility can't compete then nor can a small independant. People don't need a friendly personal service when games are heavily discounted online and digital delivery at under the rip in many cases exist.

A real shame for my local Gamestation staff. They were always very helpful & courteous. A real shame as well considering that was about the last local shop i can pick up pc stuff from.

Thanks for checking bud.

If GAME closes in the town where I work (Horsham,West Sussex) it will be impossible to buy a physical copy of even the most mainstream PC game.

GAME is the only store still stocking SOME games for PC. The local Tesco, Sainsburys, HMV no longer carry any PC titles. So yesterday I was unable to buy a copy of ME3 anywhere in the local area.

Not saying that GAME don't deserve their fate - pricing was always a rip-off. As of yesterday they were still trying to sell COD:Black Ops at £39.99 :D

Oeder from an e tailer instead?

Went into the Game store here in Metrocentre, Gateshead. Didn't bother with the console lot. Went to see what the PC "shelf" had. Nothing of worthy interest TBH. Shame tho.
