Microsoft Has to Change SkyDrive’s Name Because of a Lawsuit Now, Too

Ha. In a pain-in-the-everything development for Microsoft, it’s agreed to change SkyDrive’s name because it infringes on a trademark owned by British Sky Broadcasting Group (aka Sky or BSkyB). This is, of course, deeply funny.
Last year, Microsoft had to rename its Metro interface after it lost a slapfight over the name called with European partner Metro Group. This one seems, on the surface at least, even sillier, since the issue is reportedly over Sky’s existing products like channels Sky One and Sky Movies, and its ability to stick “Sky” in front of literally anything.

Way to go Microsoft. ;)

I read this yesterday, found it hilarious.

Now I am looking forward to the new name, I imagine there will be a lot of thought about the next one. They can't face any more embarrassment surely?

I was a bit confused when they said skydrive and wondered if I'd misread who it was from. But then decided I didn't care and could tell the difference.

I thought Apple have already tried that with their i branding. You have to trademark individual names and not blanket a whole word?

For those who'd rather not wade through the amateur trolling to get to the actual news -

I can see Sky's case, but why now? SkyDrive has been around forever. I can only assume it got very popular. Rebranding it as "Microsoft SkyDrive" surely would clear up any confusion.

I wonder what awful name we'll end up with. Azure Storage Services (ASS)?

Sky are a broadband supplier, wouldn't surprise me if they open up a cloud storage called Skydrive in the near future. Truth is they probably only just realised they could grab the name after a lawyer suggested it.

I smelled a lawsuit incoming when I first heard the name. Its one of the more obvious disputes I've seen in the world of technology.

I still think mine is the most compelling alternative. The marketing practically writes itself.

"Stick it in your Azure Storage Service."

"Pull it out of your Azure Storage Service."

On the subject of SkyDrive they added a pretty good feature the other day - editing text files from within the browser. Supports all kinds of stuff from HTML and CSS to C# and Javascript. Even has intellisense/word completion.
