Bye bye vista

Big problem is software. If all you use is office and a web browser then vista is fine. But I use:

A 2003 based domain - vista has issues
Ultraedit - vista has issues
Dreamweaver 8 - vista has issues
Nero 6 - vista has issues
Photoshop 7 - vista has issues

I am NOT upgrading all those bits of software (the cost is over £1000) just so I can see more eye candy. Plus we cannot take the risk of a domain update with the vista patches in order to get vista to be nice on the domain. As for upgrading to 2008 servers the CAL cost is prohibitive.

XP and the software above does everything we need it to - there is not a single reason to upgrade.

What kind of issues are you having with Ultraedit and Dreamweaver 8? I run both on Vista every day without issues.

indexing + superfetch + readyboost on (using a 4GB Kingston Data traveller USB stick) = Increased HD activity bordering on disc thrashing.

indexing + superfetch + readyboost off = no disc thrashing.

Unless something's gone wrong, disk activity will stop when it's fully indexed and this should really only take a short while. This was a big Vista complaint with me but, sticking with it, I realised it's not too bad.

My disk doesn't do anything unless I'm accessing it myself now, or unless I download/install something new in which case it will take a very short time to index those files. Worth it for the improved search.

Re-read what I wrote, and understand how superfetch/indexing work. It takes a few weeks of use for the system to learn your usage pattern and complete the initial indexing. The disk thrashing rapidly calms down during this time, because for the first few weeks, it is checking, indexing and reloading things a lot.



No, use it for a few weeks then compare it, and remember, many of the benefits aren't direct performance boosts such as X fps increase in game Y, but productivity increases and do depend on the user making use of them, which means learning what they are, when they can benefit you and making use of them in that way, rather than just wanting it to be exactly like XP.

I really miss the various features of Vista when I have to use an XP PC, they seem slow and sluggish, especially when loading common programs or trying to find a file. Trying to open photoshop on XP against vista is a nightmare if vista keeps it in your superfetch and so on.

Too late, I was formatting the VISTA partiton as you were posting "don't re-format". Not to worry it's done now, I've re-installed VISTA, got the same performance rating of 6.5, installed my Intel chipset drivers, RealteK HD audio drivers, LAN drivers and the latest Nvidia drivers for my card. My 4GB USB stick was auto-detected and is being used for readyboost, the most important thing regarding this install is that with the exception of UAC (I had to turn off that annoying feature) I have left all VISTA's default services running, and guess what, so far no disk thrashing, apart from the odd burst of activity which is probably the indexing service, the hard drive is now much quieter than the first install where I had disabled many of VISTA's services. It also feels "snappier" than the first install.
Right now I have loads of software to re-install, see y'all later.

If anyone disables Readyboost + Superfetch you may as well uninstall Vista as those 2 services when disabled cause mega problems with other services failing like the SL UI Notification Service which stops things like control panel from opening and start menu programs to vanish.

Lot of issues people have with Vista are caused by this so called tweaking and following web guides which say disable this service etc etc. You get no more performance and create lots of issues. Apart from Windows Defender + Indexing I would keep all the other services on default as after the fetching settles down (only take an hour or so anyway) it is a very smooth experience.

Wuss! Vista is for some and not for others it seems. Vista is good for what I do considering I don't game anymore. It's quicker than XP ever was at opening what I need after boot up.
