C&C 3 - CPU intensive or GPU ? or both ?

Just curious. Does it rely heavily on one or the other? on huge skirmish/network games (8 player etc) it still drops my fps to as low as 22 (shock horror!!) from 30 on max detail when theres lots and lots of units. This is only in resolutions of like 1280 x 1024 as i'd expect drops with only 320mb memory on 1600x1200 +.

Current system

E6600 @ 3ghz
BFG 8800 GTS 320mb @ 630 / 949
2 gig ram
etc etc

Wondering if this could be rectified by getting the 640mb edition 8800? or if this is a CPU issue now?

Honestly you get an upgrade..you expect everything to be perfect naturally!! :D

yep its the most recent patch. I do mean really big battles btw..with lots of the tiberium in view but it does get irritating. I'm gonna try lowering a few settings to see what effect it has.

Im going to guess its more GPU than CPU as it has nice graphics and i've not seen any mention of bullet calculations being made like supreme commander.

I played the demo and I did'nt noticed much if any slow down and i've got a AMD 3200+ winchester with a 7800GTX, I think i let the game auto detect its best settings and it still looked pretty nice.

It's probably a CPU limitation. Typically in RTS games, the slowest point is nearly always down to cpu limitations i.e. when there is a lot units and explosions on the screen at once (Dawn of War being a good example).

I think it is very CPU limited, like most RTS games. I overclocked my graphics card and it made no difference what so ever to the game.

With a system like yours though I'm going to suggest there is something wrong. I have a A64 2.4GHz and a 7800GT 256mb and run 1280*1024 max everything 2 or 4x aa and 4xaf and the only time I get slowdown, to 20-25FPS, is when there are 100+ units on screen at once, or if two large armies attack at once. If a system like mine only slows down that little then I'm sure yours shouldn't have much problem. Try the latest drivers, patches, run adaware and virus scans, defrag, etc...

I think part of the problem is that with the game limited to 30fps, it's very hard to tell when you are getting close to having a framerate drop. i.e. say the cap was 60fps, we would no doubt sometimes see the framerate dropping down into the 30s, 40s and 50s. Which would kinda give you a 'warning' about the limit of what your rig can handle, and also a comparison between different systems.

What I'm getting at is that for 90% of the time, a midrange rig will performance the same as a high end rig in C&C3, i.e. they both run 30fps. Which makes people with average systems think "well, I get 30fps nearly all the time on my rig, so surely people with the best kit must have constant 30fps".

Something is wrong there...

On my system (E4300 @3.2GHZ, 2GB of ram and 8800GTS 320) I am running at 1680x1050 with AA and AF, and still get 30FPS at all times...

As i say i do mean when theres a lot of units. Like all the scrin stuff with a forcefield (40+ battleship things firing on a base). Got a feeling that its more to do with the custom maps ive been downloading too, experimenting further atm!

i can definetly say this is not gpu related, as i had this prob when i didnt bother oc'ing my cpu, as soon as i did, the problem went right out the window. so its heavy on cpu with multiple units.

Like him but I only have a x1900xt & a E6400 @ 3.3ghz. Game runs very well for me with all the eye candy

I have the same problem with the rig in my sig. I dont get framerate issues though it will run fine for 10 secs then pause for about a second then run fine again then pause. Only happens in battles with more than about 300 units involved though.

Managed to actually crash it once while playing single player. One of the nod missions i had wiped GDI off the map and was starting on the scrin base. Had around 150 various units and figured it would be a walkover. Scrin had at least 2 units for every one i had!! I threw every superweapon i had at them including at the same time as well as my 150 units. Dropped to around 1fps then BSOD. Took me ages to wipe them out once i had reloaded :D

is there actualy anyway of uncapping the 30fps? nvidia control panel that forces fps cap off, will that work?

p.s. asking cos i hate sluggish feeling games, anything below 60fps, i hate, drives me insane having that minute sluggish feel, everything HAS to be perfectly in sink with my controls (mouse and keyboard mostly)

unforchantly not.. I belive the physics and sound and yadas all run at 30, so would get out-of-sinc problems if ran any higher then set.
