Hey guys/ gals...

Have a problem with my laptop... it is a dell inspiron 1721..
Am running a dual boot setup between Windows Vista (drive R) and windows 7 (drive c). There is another hard drive which is just being used as a storage drive.
My problem is that the computer will boot into both operating systems fine but when i come to browse the c drive or relative c drive for each op i get the C drive is unavaliable, due to network problems...
This problem is also affecting all the software and all the system tools so i can't do a restore or a backup or anything.
I can browse my documents but the files don't open.

Have tried using safe mode and the system restore on the disks. Also the system restores / startup fixes on the install disks.

I have also tried to perform virus scans but i can't get to the software to scan. tried to download a registry cleaner but the temp folder is stuck on the c drive.. even when moved to the storage drive it keeps refering to the c drive.

any ideas on fixes?
Thanks
Derrick

hey, havn't had chance to try the drive in another computer but will do this afternoon. as to the chk dsk and other error checkers and defrag etc none of them work because it is saying that the drive is unnaccessible, but im using the operating system????

for about 6 months easily.....
has been working fine up till about two days ago and i just couldnt run a program and when i tried to repair the program it came up with a drive access error.. which i though was odd.. but then on furthur inspection its affected all programs except i tunes, and internet browsers...?

itunes etc I assume are definatley on your C: drive? Seems rather odd. Trying the hdd in another pc should help narrow down the problem as others have mentioned.

Have you installed anything like AV software or those "amazing" free spyware removal tools? To me it sounds like a configuration change brought about by software/virus.

no luck on trying the drive in a different comp... i havnt downloaded any software as far as i'm aware of... if i install a antivirus program to a memory stick on a different comp then move it over and try to run it will it work?

thanks guys

You tried the drive on another PC and had the same error? Odd.

Are you getting "Access Denied" or "Network Path Not Found"? Can you right click on the drive or folders to view it's Permissions?

If the drive was faulty I'd expect you to have problems with the OS aswell as programs, that's why I think it could be malacious software or some program's changed something it shouldn't have.

hey thanks .... nope its error message is something around "network path not found". will get the full message if you guys want... and i cant veiw the permissions.
The laptop is currently in windows 7 safe mode doing a malicious full system scan with the July version of the program.
will have to wait until morning to see what it finds..
cheers

ahhh semi success.... tried accessing the security/ permissions section of the drive from the safe mode setting and it worked.. i can now veiw the drive and browse it... but i still havn't got sufficent privlidges to do other tasks like move files and other things... might try again..
getting there though.

Well that's a start. ;) If you're using an Administrator account you should be able to Take Ownership or modify the Permission List.

You're not trying to access your Windows 7 personal folders in Vista and vice-versa are you? If so, Windows will see them as belonging to someone else and will prevent you accessing them, in much the same way it stops you accessing other account's Documents and Settings Folder.

OK!

Right ok ... after using the accounts to change the permissions of each others hard drives everything seems to be back to normal... am just updating my antivirus so i can do a scan to see if anything is left behind etc.

all i can say is thanks again for the support and different ideas.
Cheers again!

p.s will post if anything intresting comes up during my after scans. :)
