Hi all,

ive had a 2.0 TDCI focus c-max 2005 for about 8 months now and a couple of months ago it started having very intermittent issues with starting, maybe once a week, this has got gradually worse to a point where its about 50/50 weather the car will start first time or not. it has never failed to start it just takes 2-3 tries removing the key and trying again. ive looked around and found a post online mentioning an 'anti shudder/stutter valve' (ASV) i had a read through and the issue sounds just like mine but the problem is i cant find any reference to an ASV on ford engines

i know what part it is due to a couple of photos but nothing ever went into replacing the part and i cant find it online.

also the pipework seems to have a lot of oil in it but as it seems to be the air intake to the engine im guessing thats just come out of the engine over time (i hope thats the case anyway)

i took a few pictures to show the issue i just hope someone can offer some advice.

i removed the jewbelie slip here:

and the hose looked like this (sorry hard to get a good pic so ive illuminated the one i took) but you can see a trail of oil down the bottom (it didnt seem to wipe off seemed more like a stain or very old oil but some was still mobile)

finally the pictures i managed to get of the valve open and closed

i tried starting the car about 20 times checking the valve position each time and about 1/3 of those the valve had shut itself and jammed in place, the valve does release itself every now and then with an audible faint pop (only noticeable when the hose is off)

i am taking it into a garage next week as i need a quote for a pair of front dampers and will ask them at the time but it seems like something accessible for me to have a go at or replace myself if possible.

so then any ideas? :)

cheers

Im going to be honest and say that's a lot 9f oil in the intakem my 19 year old mr2 had way less oil than that in the intake after 19 years and some hard abuse. yours looks like it is passing it. Check for a stuck PCV or something. Doesn't look normal to me.

Did you have a Turbo diesel MR2 though?

I'd just remove the valve assembly and give it a good clean to start with. BTW, it's a Jubilee clip (at least the brand name is). Jewbelie sounds like a Yiddish gastric complaint :D

Have you checked the oil lately? Does the oil filler cap have lots of white gunky stuff on ir? Does car run OK?

The filler cap was clean and oil is full as it has just been serviced but I do check oil, tyre pressure and screen wash regular and in the near 8 months prior to the service I've never had to fill/top it up so I'm not losing oil

The car runs fine, bit rough when cold but no worse then when I had a new Toyota diesel and really smooth when warm.

I found the part online and its about £60 so I'll try give it a clean, I'm guessing a cloth and WD40 is the best thing?

Clean it with carb cleaner but why it is dumping that much oil would be my concern. My guess is and it is a guess there is too much crankcase pressure blowing it and the oil out of the breathers.

Excessive crankcase pressure can be a sign of worn/broken piston rings along with other less major cheaper less likely problems

This is always going top happen with the oil I think.

The pic does look like it shows an egr cooler pipe. Which will supply wet exhaust gas mixing with crankcase oil vent fumes = going oily crud. Modern emmision policy demotes this terrible design.

The gears on the valve you are looking at might have worn.

ive just put a can of wynns EGR cleaner spread between the throttle body (i know what its called now) and the air line to the EGR.

i did get a toothbrush in there and gave it a good scrub and wipe out with a cloth before doing the recommended spray into the valve instructions.

took it out for a run and i dont know if it will last but the throttle response is a lot better so i dont know if it cleared some crap out and so far its turned on first time in 3 attempts.

cheers for the help guys, its been a learning experience and ive enjoyed it as ive never been a car guy but always like problem solving issues myself... i was even tempted to pick up a haynes manual but ill leave that for the next problem :)
