I have a number of folders on my C Drive (I believe the term is Root). Previously I only had (I think) Documents and Settings, Program Files and Windows.

Now I have a number of folders directly on the C Drive and wonder if they were placed there to be installed elsewhere and they can now be safely deleted?

1. [named] ATI…. With subfolder SUPPORT with sub, sub folders BIN, CCC, Help, Driver etc

2. [Named] DRIVERS, This one has many sub folders, 006_STORAGE, with sub folders 3WARE, 64XX, ADAPTEC, VIA, etc, etc, another Sub Folder Audio, with RealtekHD folder and an AudigySE.exe file 56MB in size.

Is the drivers folder above just a repository for drivers installed on the computer or are they actually installed? Could I burn them to a CD and then delete them? Would that be safe?

3. [Named] UPDATES, this has a folder named DIRECTX (with lots of CAB files) and 5 other application files, named DOTNETFX.EXE, MSJAVWU.EXE, WINDOWSXP_KB912945_X86.EXE, WM9CODECS.EXE AND WMP9_MM2.EXE.

Will these exe programs have been downloaded and installed and now can be safely deleted?

There are a few others but I’ll try and resolve these first

Thanx anyone.

You'll be fine to delete them it's just files that were used in the image of the OS on that machine the OEM would have done an unattended install and those folders are just left over because they didn't delete them, they would have already been installed on first run most likely. Though you may as well burn them to a CD just in case you may need them again.

Thanx a million. I'll have a go at burning them off when I get some software and disks to do the job.
