Hey all.

Given the challenge of a £300 budget for a PC (Minus the memory)

I seen this processor, and I just wondered if anyone has experience from it?

Good for overclocking and such? Or should I go for something else...

Thanks for anything :)

Ok, is it a C2D? or a C2Q? if it is indeed a "Q8300" then it's a C2Q quad core @ 2.50GHz if it's a C2D as you've said then it'll be an "E8300" which is a dual core @ 2.86GHz

Either are fairly good processors - depends on the price really doesn't it :)

Try to establish exactly which CPU you are looking at :)

For instance, a Q8300 will have the followig numbers marked on top of the heatspreader

AT80580PJ0604MN
AT80580PJ0604ML

A E8300 this number

EU80570AJ0736M

What are the full parts you require?

I have come up the bits below, changed the cpu to AMD quad, but this is slightly slower but cheaper and also utilize DDR 3.

You would be better off buying a second hand Q6600 G0 for around £80. It has a total of 8MB L2 cache, whereas the Q8300 has a total of 4MB L2 cache. The Q6600 can be overclocked more, as it has a multiplier of 9, as whereas the Q8300 has a multiplier of 7.5. In my opinion the Q6600 is the best value C2Q chip, but you'll need to buy a used one because they're no longer made.

Also, for the price of that Q8300, you may as well buy an i5.

There's a 37B Q6600 G0 going on a popular auction site right now (if the pictures are to be trusted) for 80 bucks b/o, it's much better value and this particular batch is well known for breaching 3.8 on low volts, Q8300 would probably be more trouble than its worth. You can probably get a good cheap P35/P45 board on the same place too and end off with a setup that could give an i5 a run for its money.

@SuperJeep

Sorry, I didn't understand the second part

@lcg

Yeah, but used parts tend to not have warranty... So if I bought it, breaks in about 4-5 months I'm screwed. Can't buy an i5 anyway, I'm on a £300 budget...

@Hairybudda

Auction site being...eBay or something?

Something like that, don't want to fall foul of the competitor linking rule you see. Just look at screenshots and look out for L737B in the batch string on the chip.

That's true, so I can't argue against what you're saying. All I can say is that the CPU is the most resistant component to damage, so I would say the odds of it failing are very slim. Regardless of warranty, for your build, I would argue that a Q6600 is the best value processor for it.

£112.79 for a Q8300 with warranty vs. £80 or less for a Q6600 without warranty. Personally, I would with the Q6600 as it's a better processor, and I think it isn't worth paying the extra because the Q8300 is new and has a warranty. Of course, that's just my personal opinion.

Hmmm, I want to go with the better chip, but like I said, if it breaks I'm pretty screwed.

That being said, from what I've seen (Benchmarks) It's the better chip...
So I shall have a look around and see where I can get it.
Hopefully for cheap...
Thanks guys :)

Now just to find a decent motherboard...
