c2d to quad is it worth it

I changed from an e8400 to a q9550. It did brilliant things for virtualbox (which was the intention) but I think that's the only area I noticed any difference in. Encoding films would go quicker with a quad core, but as whenever I do that I queue a load of them and leave it running overnight it's hard to see that as significant.

Going for an extra few mhz probably makes the most sense here. Personally I'd take the processor down to around the 3ghz mark and find out what the ram is capable of before going any further; if you're above 3.6ghz and it's unstable you've no way of knowing whether it's the ram, motherboard or cpu at the moment. That'll suck when it fails prime95.

I would look at all the games you play and see if they benefit from a quad first.
Quite a good few games run better on quad cores such as I found bad company 2 choppy on my old core 2 duo.
Obviously you aren't going to notice much difference if the games don't care about quads.

I think sell 8400 and get a Q6600/Q9550 would be worthwhile if you can get a decent price for your 8400 you are laughing. But wouldn't get a quad i5/i7 at this stage in the game.
