Ok i've owned my car for about 3 years now (2004 Honda Civic) and its been a fantastic little car so far (Super cheap to run and insure .. i don't do many miles in it). But recently it has started to become extremely noise when in the car when i travel and any speed over 40mph.. and at motorway speeds 60+ its sounds like you have a jet engine in the boot.. its a sort of loud humming / booming sound.

I thought it might have been the exhaust (which was old and needed replacing) but a new exhaust made no difference. The sound is not engine related as if i turn off the car while travelling at over 40mph the sound it still there... infact the engine super quiet.

Next i suspected it could be road noise from my tyres wearing low.. new tyres all round has made no difference..

So im out of ideas? Anyone got any suggestions? Its just had a full MOT and Service from Honda but came back clear.. (i suspected a worn wheel bearing? but it would have failed the MOT)

It'll be a wheel bearing i'd think, they can sound quite loud when they go. In an MOT they will probably only check for play in the wheel but you don't always get that with a failing wheel bearing, they'd only notice it if they span the wheel around while it was up in the air and heard the rumbling.

I have a bearing on it's way out on the rear which starts at 40mph and goes off at 50mph. Really annoying, a bit like a droning noise.

There is no play in it but when I jack the car up and spin the wheel you can feel it has a rougher resistance rather than a smooth spin.

Try just lifting the car and spinning the wheel, you can actually feel it the rotation is not as smooth on the worn side.

Ahh nice one.. Well at least my suspiciouns were well founded. I'll double check them tomorrow... Just need to get it replaced which no doubt won't be cheap.

Do not ignore noisy wheel bearings!

You might get away with it for quite a long time, but at the same time, Noise=heat! and a hot bearing can seize in an instant! A wheel sheering off at speed (and it does happen) is not a pleasant experience!
