Braid comparisons

I'll come clean at the start and say I've something of a fetish for braiding cables. Not that I'm averse to a nicely executed pre braided cable you understand, it's just that I find braiding very therapeutic, almost cathartic.

Over the years I've used many types of braid from many retailers so thought i would start a bit of a comparison going. The aim is to openly share the various attributes of different braids.

If I like a braid, I'll say so, however of course if it's not from OCUK forum rules will prevent from saying where from, but as there is no intention fot criticism if I don't think it's any good I'll say why I don't, but not where it came from. The aim is not to name and shame.
Please feel free to add in your own braid.

First up are a couple of examples of braid that I've used.

braid 1 anonymous
quite an open mesh, of a single strand weave. Not very dense and does not mask out the colour of the cables well unless they are also black.

braid 2 anonymous
Reasonably dense triple strand weave although some penetration of cable colour was still exident when used. On this picture you can clearly see the white cloth penetrating through in places, although nothing like as bad as No.1

Braid 3 retailer removed by G-Dubs Dense weave braid
Like Braid 2 this is a triple strand weave, however here the density of the weave is much greater. The picture below does not show penetration of white from the cloth below. This is currently my braid of choice.

You are just showing off your new camera and photo taking skills mate and you know it. :)

What about that Bitfenix Alchemy stuff then? That's different construction again isn't it?

Can you buy pre-braided stuff? I've always like the look of braiding wires but i never unstood how people do it... Newbie i know. Is there any links you can point me to?

Yes you can get pre-braided extension cables Bitfenix and NZXT do some good stuff I really like the Bitfenix stuff use it in my case.

G-dubs that 3rd stuff that from Tom?

I'd very much doubt it. I'd reckon that the 1st is from Welsh Tom, 2nd is another UK watercooling retailer, and 3rd is a certain German Nils...

Haha I like that names not been named but it has been guessed who is who. Good to see Wales competing with Germany though. Next build will have to use the Welsh stuff looks good and a lot cheaper :) shame I started with mdpc stuff so got to finish with it.

No your deffinatly wrong about that Tom doesnt stock rubbish like that he has dense weave shipped in.

I've used all three (if they're what I think they are), though I'll admit the first two, I'd change the order (so the first is Watercooling someoneorother, the second is Tom's freezing place, and the third is a very expensive PC).

^ I don't know the first, but second is mdpc (it's not a competitor the name can be mentioned :p ) and the third is a special watercooling shop.

Ok, the third is a special place. so greboth gets that one.

None of them are The 1,000,000$$ place, or Tom

...and the other 2, keep guessing (while I look out my old invoices and try to remember)

Haha whooo go me! (Though slight advantage when I read your post on their forum first and you mention the name - Don't tell anyone! :p)

I really did think 2 was mdpc, though comparing it to some black mdpc I have number 2 is too see through. The mystery continues ...

You know with pre-braided cables, are they like an expansion that you put on the end of the normal cable?

I think you mean extension, but yeah. they have a "female" connection on one end which fits into the "male" of the cable from for example your PSU, then they have a "male" on the other end which connects with whatever it is your connecting to.

Hey now that's cheating, but don't worry I won't tell anyone here if you don't.

Struggling to remember who number 2 is, but as I said in the OP I'm not intending to give bad RP to anyone. I've used them all at the end of the day with varying degrees of satisfaction but never did I think this stuff is so poo i'm not using it (came close with 1 though :)

I know you're not allowed to mention any competitors, but does anyone know if it's possible to get pre-braided orange sata cables? I know a place I can get the braiding from to do it myself, but I don't know how hard a sata cable would be to braid :(

Enable your trust and PM me and i'll see if I can help.

Don't think any of those are MDPC - too shiny and plasticky.

First one could be cheap techflex stuff?

EDIT: thread reading fail xD.
