Cable Extension

Hi There,

Seen various options for extending the breakout box further from the pc, looking to do around 10m myself.

Has anyone else done this and has confirmed working links to products available in the UK?

Just done this, this weekend, used a USB2.0 "active" Cable has to be active. That was a 10M cable.

Then a standard HMDI 10M cable - That didn't work! Had to order another HDMI Active cable this time and that worked fine.

So from my experience as long as the cables are active cables ie the power is boosted then you should be fine.

Some people have got over 25m active cables working fine..

Same as JackCarver. Ordered some slightly more expensive 'active' cables (USB and HDMI) and after some faffing , having to reboot my whole machine to get the vive to work again, it now works fine.

The only trouble now is that the monitor is in the other room so makes it a pain to direct people in the VR whilst also keeping an eye on them so they don't break anything.

If you have a laptop or tablet you can use a remote desktop app like teamviewer, thats what I do when extending 15m downstairs for other peolple to use.

Here is a link with info on cables that people have tested as working, some of it is US based but there is also UK stuff on there

I did a remote desktop link and run the Performance test on the main PC .. but it then give me that my PC was not up to the job

so try but I expect it might fail to work vive correct

eh? was the vive connected to the main PC?
what GPU do you have on the main PC?

I use Teamviewer and it makes absolutely no difference to what is going on in the vive

Can anyone tell me if a 7.5m HDMI cable needs to be active to work for extending my vive?

EDIT: and any links to already tried and tested cables that work?

This is a 10 m cable that works for me, Vive and 980ti.

Nice one! What are you using for USB?

What im after is a USB hub with at least 2 USB ports, one for vive and one for a mouse or even a keyboard to use with virtual desktop etc.

Have been trying to look for a 4 port usb over ethernet but can only find very expensive ones in the uk.

If I get no luck down that route might try an active 10m USB with 2 ports.

Overclockers sell active usb leads, so I don 't think I can mention a competitor in this case.

I faffed stupidly with a few things and very nearly gave in and bought a second HDMI extension for the TV right up until I realised I already have a chromecast and just used that to send the PC screen to the TV with the mirror display up. Its not video smooth but it is ok for showing what the person is seeing in the HMD. Worth a try if you already have one.

Also if you dont quite need 10m you can get away with standard 5m cables, they dont need to be active at that length and for me I managed to go out the study room, through the side of the staircase and drop to around knee height for the breakout box in my living room, from there the HMD cable was plenty long for using in that room
