Cable model won't connect when TV box is connected...

I'm round my friend house and she has virgin internet and TV....

When both TV and the cable modem are plugged in, the TV works, but the "CABLE" light does not come on on the cable modem....

When I hook the wire straight up to the cable modem (no splitter), the cable light comes on...

What is causing this and how can I fix it?

It's probably due to to low signal levels once you split the signal. The only thing you can do is get Virgin back in to have a look and maybe increase your signal strength at the green box out in the street.
