Need your help guys.

Just got cable (Telewest) which come with a modem. I can connect to the net no problem and I can access the admin panel on the router wirelessly.

However when I plug in the modem to the WAN port on the router and connect wirelessly to the router I cant access the net. Page cannot be displayed.

The router is Linkysis Wireless Acess point + cable/dsl router with 4 port switch model no - BEFW11S4.

What could be the problem? I havent got a software firewall installed, apart from win xp. In win xp firewall>Advanced>Network Connection Settings - Wireless Network Connection is ticked.

Cheers Mark

maybe you got the ports disabled in the router? or its got mac filtering on? something like that? try switching the cable that connects from the router to the modem and use it to connect the modem to your pc and see if that works. if it works wirelessly theres something wrong with the cables prolly.

Ive restored the factory settings on the router, not that I altered them anyway.

If I connect the cable from the modem to the PC it works, thats how Im on here.

But when I connect the modem to the router the WAN link doesnt come on.

Any ideas?

Ip problem perhaps? Im stumped!

Have you rebooted the modem when you are swapping the connection? i.e. when you unplug it from the PC to attach it to the router, you will need to restart it by pulling out the mains lead for a few seconds.

Turn off modem.
Turn off router.
Attache modem to router.
turn on modem - wait for flashing lights to go stable. approx 30 seconds.
turn on router - wait for lights to stablise (another 30 seconds)

try your PC again.

Ive tried switching off the modem and router and starting them up in the correct order but the WAN light still doesnt come on

Is there a manual way to sort the MAC addressess out?

Is this an old router, i.e. have you used its WAN port before?

Also, when you connect modem to router is it the same (working) cable that you use when connecting directly to PC? If not try another cable. Have a dodgy network cable which I need to wiggle around for it to work :(

Its a new router. Havent used the WAN port before. Is there anything I can do to check this?

Im using the same cable that works between the modem and the pc to connect the modem to the router.

:(

What does the router status page show? Does it have an IP Address for the WAN side?

If you unplug the cable, do the lights go out?

On the status page of the router it doesnt have an IP. It is set to auto acquire IP is this right?

When I plug the modem cable into the WAN port no lights come on, not even link, and no lights come on or anything when I unplug it.

:(

Hmm ideally you'll just have to restart your 'modem' and the router should be able to pick it up. I'd check the settings in your router. Enable DHCP and get your IP automatically from your ISP. Is there some sort of wizard?

IMO router could possibly be faulty. Look around the port & see if any damage, etc.
