hi guys

i am after a cable router with build-in 1Gb switches for my 50mb virgin media

reason: i got a download box for usenet. so transfering large data to main rig over 100Mb takes ages. both machines has 1Gb lan port.

so which router you'd recommend? i'm not bothered about wireless at all.

cheers :)

As Duke says if you're otherwise happy with your current router, it's easiest (and cheapest) to buy a gig switch to connect to the router :)

The general range of routers with gig switches isn't brilliant at the moment (from what i've seen), and tend to be fairly expensive.

Although I throught the router VM were sending out for 50mb was gigabit on the lan side?

As of 3 months ago I got a D-Link DIR-615 router. The ports on this router are unfortunately not Gigabit rated. I'm not sure what the current router dished out by Virgin is but I'm guessing you have the same as me.

Either way, a Gigabit rated switch connected to the router (whether the router is Gigabit rated or not) will solve your problem. File transfers between your "main rig" and your "download box" (NAS drive??) will be controlled by the switch at Gigabit speeds. This of course is assuming you connect both devices to the switch rather than one device to the switch and the other to the router....

That's how I've wired my Network as described below

Virgin modem > Virgin supplied router > 24 port Gigabit switch > Devices

using linksys WRT54GL router with tomato firmware.

d-link router provided by virginmedia doesnt have 1Gb switch

i thought if i add a 1Gb switch to my network and use uplink port for linksys router. all traffic will go thro to linksys router as gateway therefor would slow down the network to 100Mb?

switch is dumb hardware, all it's do is pass over packets to gateway (linksys router) or it'll learn its own IP table?

i've done cisco CCNA course last year but i forgot most of them :(

No, it's on the same subnet so the adjacency check tells it to forward it directly, only does a route lookup if the adjacency check fails...

Definately not. I run my home network like that (As do most people who use gigabit im guessing!) and get 70/80 mb/s easily.

I bought the Sitecom WL-308 v1 a long while back (model series 300N XR Gigabit Gaming Router) and it's been excellent. I've noticed a new firmware today so have updated to it too.

I had the Netgear Wireless N Gigabit router before it and wasn't a great fan due to latest firmwares being crap.

The plus point for this router being 10 year warranty which is pretty epic.

Performance wise I get full Gigabit LAN speeds as well as full 300MBps wireless N speeds.
