Why is this?

I keep getting "limited connectivity" when I hook the modem directly to the PC.

I've tried USB and ethernet, and both give exactly the same problem. My ISP is virgin, fwiw.

Are you turning the modem off for a minute after disconnecting it from the router, and waiting for it to sync before connecting the PC? (if you don't reboot the PC you will need to open a dos box and run ipconfig /release, ipconfig /renew).

I use to have a problem whereby you have to register the PC's Mac address with the provider before connecting it to the modem otherwise it wouldn't provider Internet. If you've previously used your router, then it's registered that Mac address. Try calling them up (Virgin... NTL/Telewest) and explaining that.

You don't have to do that with NTL (and haven't for a fairly long while;)) for standalone cable modems, i'm not sure about BY (or their respective VM areas).

I think they both work by the modem's mac address these days :)
