Hiya's,

VM 20meg sux and with caps i don't see why i should continue to pay £37 a mth, anyways ........

Going to call BT seeing as line install offer is £29.99

Now a neighbour over the road had 8meg sky adsl + tv + phone

Used his BT number to check for 24meg etc

This is what it threw up .......

"Your exchange has been upgraded to 21CN around 30/04/2008.

This means you will shortly be able to upgrade your line to our new up to 24 Mbps services"

Now i want o2/be as fast as possible

My address as crow-flies from Lichfield exchange is 1581meters

I know this is nowhere near to actual line length

Does it look good for me with this sparse info i've found for a decent ADSL speed ??

(really 10meg or above and i'd be happy)

Many Thanks

Hiya,

Well i guess i just choose an ADSL ISP (o2/be) and when they connect etc they will sort my best speed ??

(all this adsl stuffs new to me as i've only had dial-up and cable)

Ahh well 7th the BT engineer's here, Plenty time i hope to research adsl info etc

Cheers for reply :)

I notice o2 business 20meg is a good price

And then there's be with 24meg (no-one around me has over 8meg as they only surf and they have it with sky etc)

Both say no caps etc

Think i might go with o2 business 20meg and as long as it's over 10meg i aint fussed now

Seems 2-4wks after contacting either to get whatever adsl is connected onto my new phoneline

So stuck with VM for longer than i'd hoped :(

Cheers Again :)

In real terms, it'll more likely be around a week from phone line activated to working ADSL. The biggest issue will be waiting for the BT database to update so Be can take your order.

Hiya Again,

Ahh a week aint too bad i guess, anything to leave VM lol

BT's already gave me the phone number, I tried it on an adsl tester site and the number's unrecognised (obviously this is what you mean by bt updating their database or maybe when engineer's actually fitted line and box then it will be on bt's system so adsl checkers etc can detect it)

Just a pain having to pay another 37 quid out for another months usage (i use usage loosely lol)

Cheers Again :)

Hiya's,

Thought these next questions would be fine in this thread, so here goes ........

1: The BT engineer, I read they need a pin-code and use their mobile to do a line-distance test, Would i be ok asking him to do this ?

2: My pc is going to be approx 25ft away from where the BT line will enter the room, Is this a problem ? Or can the engineer run the line nearer to where i want it ? (extra charge ? or a gratuity payment to engineer ;) ? lol)

3: Router, Never had one/used one, Am i right in thinking these are good for adsl as it can help sort/aid connection tweaking ??

Any Advice be cool :)

Many Thanks

o2 supply a router/modem which is ok one thing the router should have is a Broadcom chipset.
In respect of the incoming line BT will probable put your master socket near to where the line enters the building - all extentions to bedroom /bog or whatever, coming from there. It is best to have a filtered faceplate (such as the £12 adslnation one) on the master socket and to plug ones router cable into that.
If joining o2 there is a bungback by clicking thru www.quidco.com. If you want extention run I expect it will cost - if BT do the job!

Heya marmalade,

Will it be ok to order one of those filtered faceplates today ?

NTL left me a lot of phone-line so i could move it (doubt bt engineer would do this lol)

Will look into quidco ;)

Will offer a gratuity of course for an extension ;) never know, Other than that a set-rate cost i guess

Cheers for info :)

ps: BE, Do you get a router with this ? (still really undecided on BE or O2, Decissions hmm)

I have both Virgin Media Cable and Be* in my house.

I have to say that the faceplates made about a 25% increase in performance in my ADSL line. It jumped from about 8Mb connection to 10Mb, depending on the weather. I'm about 1.5km from my exchange (straight line distance) so we're comparable in that way, but it does depend on the line noise and attenuation which vary from place to place.

Be* gave me a free Thompson/Speedtouch router and I got money (or a month free) for the refer-a-friend scheme. I completely forgot about Quidco at the time, so I don't know how much that is. The router isn't that good though; it's unstable and runs quite hot. Don't know if the instability is related to the heat, but it probably is.

I'm running a Netgear DG834N now for my ADSL. You can tweak both the Speedtouch and the Netgear to trick it into syncing at a faster speed - it plays with the SNR ratio. If you can get the right stability/performance balance then you're sorted. I'm pretty much stable at anything above 3db.

If anyone cares, I got the Virgin Media Cable after I had ADSL. I was completely happy with the ADSL, but I just wanted faster speeds. The traffic management doesn't bother me as I know how to schedule my downloads. Now I'm happy with both ISPs.

You probably get as many people complaining about ADSL as those who complain about the Cable capping. Personally, I think that people just like to have a moan about something or anything.
;) :p

Hiya Clown,

Well i'll get the faceplate

Had a read about it and it makes sense

Ohh i was over the moon with my ntl cable tv n phone, Went downhill though after ntl bought the virgin brand name lol

But when the price for BB goes up and the usage allowance goes down i had had enough

After all when a pint of milk goes up in price you pay the difference and you still have a pint of milk, With VM BB the prices go up and you're ending up with less usage than before with an increase in price lol (and 6 days out of 7 i would just check forums so not in no way a heavy user) (when i have to pay more for less i call it a day, that's includes everything not just broadband)

Anyways, I think i am going with BE, As i read i can swap to O2 business free of charge at anytime if i wanted to

So far i am going to order that faceplate

Wait for thursday to come, See if he can gimme a line-distance and see what he says to having box where i'd like lol

Way more stuff to learn with adsl than with cable so i'm slowly learning (i hope he he)

Many Thanks

Hiya's,

T'is me back again lol

BT called me on mobile earlier to confirm install this thursday (of course i said yep lol)

I asked a few questions, One was this .......

Do i have a say where the interior box will be placed, eg: am i stuck with where a new line would be quickest/shortest installed ? He answered No, When the engineer calls just tell him where you would like the new box fitted and he should do that (unless extremely awkward or runs way too long lol, but it isn't :) )

So hopefully my new box will be by my pc, The extra length from original line entry point is just 20ft around 2 walls with no obstructions etc

Roll on thursday :)

Ohh meant to say

Gonna ask the engineer if he can do me a line-distance to exchange

Crow flies around 1k for me, I'm sure neighbours is 1.4k line distance test (though mine could go a longer route :( ) (his line distance is 1.7km, Told me lastnight)

That site's what i've been swatting up on lol, Real informative it is too

Hiya's,

Well line went in fine

Engineer tested line length :(

Comes back at 2.5km

Neighbour over the road (50feet away) said his was 1.7km

Go figure, Ohh well :(

Signed up with O2 business, So will have to wait and see what speed i can get

I've had that before, we're like 800m from our exchange, next door is easly twice that as the line comes off a different pole :P
harsh to be honest

Hard to say exactly what you'll get as line distance is just one factor - the quality of the cabling, the route it takes to the exchange and your house extension wiring, if any, can all affect it. However on average, if all is well, with a 2.5km line length it should be somewhere in the 12mbit region.

I'm aaving a bit of an issue with getting my ADSL sorted. BT reactivated my line on Tuesday but it had a permanent buzz on the line and the engineer had gone before I had a chance to check it out. Eventually got a fault logged and an engineer came out this morning - he was a bit annoyed that the previous engineer didn't do his job as he left the house with an old BT socket (no removable faceplate) going into a dodgy old GPO junction box which must date back to the 60s or 70s. The 2nd engineer ran a nice new cable with a new socket so no more buzzing :)

Only problem I'm left with now is that the guy said he'd go to the exchange today to enable my ADSL (Be told me it'd be monday) so I was quite happy about that. When he got there he gave me a call to say that the ADSL order had been cancelled. I checked with Be and they said their system says everything's fine. Not looking good, cheers BT ;)
