Currently have a Linksys WRT54GL with custom firmware on that I'm using with Virgin (cable) broadband but we are thinking of switching to Sky BB since it's a) cheaper and b) likely to be much better than the crap we're getting from Virgin (constant throttling even when I don't exceed the limit and general slowness).

Will I be able to use the router still, just using the sky one as a modem? Or is the router Sky provides good enough? For some reason I seem to remember something about it being locked. Which is bad because I want to be opening ports etc.

Any other thoughts on Sky? Worth the switch?

You should be able to. The router sky provides is a Netgear DG834GT. I'm not sure if the locks prevent stuff like port forwarding (I'd not really expect it to). There's a way you can flash the router to a normal or custom firmware though, so it shouldn't be an issue :)

You should be able to set the router to just act as a modem and continue using your ethernet router but it's been a while since I've used the GT so I'm no longer 100% sure on this (though I *am* 99% sure).

You can sue the router Sky provide in bridged mode which means it's basically just a mdoem and your current router will handle DHCP etc. They provide various routers but afaik you can unlock them all, them being locked just means you can't update the firmware really. You still have just about full functionality incl port forwarding.
