Ive just signed our house up for NTL bb, got 2mb and phone for about £25 /month which was pretty cheap.

Now we just need a decent router to do the job.

Ive seen a few on Ocuk, i like the look of the Linksys ones, but not sure about the others really.

Can anyone recommend me a decent one?

Thanks

Ive also seen a sicko Draytek one:

Which looks brilliant, but is pretty expensive.

Can anyone comment on this?

Thanks

A draytek would be fine if that's what you want - a £40 cheapo router isn't for everyone.

I had the linksys cable router wrt54g and found it very reliable :)

Better getting a WRT54GL now.

id rather go with a very well known company like Netgear / Linksys for routers anyday. Over a company that is trying to lick ntl's backside :P

O...k.

Ok indeed :)

Draytek routers are supposed to be bloody brilliant.

So ive heard.

But yeah the WRT54GL is probably the next best thing that i might go for.

Any setup advise people can give me for this?

Making no sense must be fun.

What do you mean? Just connect cable modem -> router -> machines, enable wireless security (see wireless FAQ for starters, ask specific questions if you need to)/disable wireless and off you go.

The current GS has Speedbooster, the GL runs *nix rather than VXWorks (and has more RAM, flash etc) and will run all the third party firmware that's floating around.
www.linksysinfo.org is your friend.

I've got a draytek 2200We

I picked mainly got it for it's VPN abilities.
It's been reliable, the Wi-Fi is solid
It was rebooted sometime in 2006. I can't say I think about it much, which is just what you want from a bit of kit.

A bit expensive, but a good 2nd hand buy I'd guess.

I mean in terms of third party firmware upgrades? Like is there a specific one which is recommended?

Also am i right in thinking that i will be able to use this on an adsl connection as well (providing i have an ethernet adsl modem?).

Would you recommend one of these for 360 networks.. ? I liked the idea of the D-link gamer-fuel as im always downlaoding and the less it affects games the better.

My current D-link dosnt support opening port ranges.. only indivdual ports.

The WRT54GL will beat it for signal strength as it can be turned up to something insane like 9x the stock power. This may also be useful if you don't have a microwave handy

Speedbooster requires hardware that can support speed booster on both ends and DD-WRT has the option to enable it on the GL

Here
New model line, released after the version 5 WRT54G, which returns to a Linux-based internal OS as opposed to the v5's VxWorks firmware. NOT SpeedBooster enabled in stock state (third party firmwares however, like DD-WRT, will enable the SpeedBooster feature on this model, as it is hardware independent). Essentially the same as the WRT54G version 4.0, but with a new model number.

You can pick up GS 1.1 refurbs with 32/8 for £30 each online but if you want peace of mind the GL will be perfect for you.

hmm i currently have a 125 belkin card in my mams notebook, im not sure if this tech is compatable with the WRT54GL speedboost tech.

i can also get virtually all hardware at a low price so refurbs arent necessary really.

gah torn between the WRT54GL and the Belkin PRE N tbh!
