I've signed up my new student house to Telewest for internet and telephones. Haven't ever used wireless before (or cable broadband for that matter), resorted to drilling extensive holes through the house instead :p. So is any equipment viewed as better than others? Just by the name I'm looking at the Netgear "WGR614 54Mbps Wireless Cable DSL Router" and their 54Mbps wireless PCI and PCMCIA cards. Is that alright? Does the router bypass the telewest modem and plug straight into the cable line?

thanks!

People tend to have better experiences with some kit than others. In my experience, both Netgear and Linksys wireless kit is fine. I've had no real issues with either except my Netgear DG834GT router had pretty crappy range. Different story for some people though - could've been my house for whatever reason.

In short, you're likely to get a mix of people recommending Linksys and Netgear and likely others too. In reality you can't really go wrong with either (not with a cable router anyway) so yes, the Netgear you suggested will be fine.

You'll still need to use the cable modem - the Telewest-supplied cable modem will plug into the WAN port on the router.

Fantastic :). I'm hoping since it's a small terrace house the signal will cope ok. Glad the standard ones aren't universally hated. Saves £40 on the next model up!
