Cable to optical?

How would one go about taking a 5.1sound 3.5mm jackplug setup and hooking it into a optical setup?
Is it even possible?

not without a converter, obviously

You'll need a 5.1 ADC (analogue to digital controller) Costly. Just buy a new soundcard.

Have an x-fi and a set of free yamaha 5.1 speakers. They are pretty good and was wondering how to connect them as the speakers only connect via digital.
Mostly use my Beyers but tis nice to have a free head to move around and still hear stuff..anyhoo is it possible without incuring too much cost.
Perhaps I`ll just sell em.

Get 3 3.5mm to 2xRCA converter cables. If your speakers have analogue multichannel input you'll be fine. If not. sell the X-fi and buy the HDA X-mystique
