The two tend to be mutually exclusive, to a large degree. What does he need the router to do? Wireless G or N? Which package is he on? If it's 20 meg or below wireless G will do fine, though N is a bit more 'future proof' should he decide to upgrade to 50 megs plus later on.
A WRT54GL with Tomato on it would be great for 20 megs. The Asus RT-N16 is great for 50 megs but a bit dearer... As I said, mutually exclusive.
Look around for a WRT54GL or an early WRT54G (not the new ones as they're not Linux compatible, and thus can't run Tomato firmware). I sold one in MM for £25 yesterday, you missed it! They do keep popping up though, so just have a look here and on certain auction websites etc.
