I just read an article which stated:

"Generally solid core cable is used for connecting between the wall socket and the socket in the patch panel whilst standard cable is used for the patch leads between hubs/switch and patch panel socket and between wall port and computer."

I'm new to networking/cabling so am not sure what to believe, as i assumed it was ok to use standard cat5 cable? If not, what exactly is solid core cable?

solid core is used for infrastructure wiring

stranded core is used for patch cables,
as it's flexible

electrically they are the same thing

it's the same in houses, ring main is solid core, kettle leads are stranded
.
