Looking to spec a computer for a mate.
He just wants it for normal office stuff, watching a few dvds. But also to run CAD on it.
Quick look at the autoCad specs

http://www.autodesk.co.uk/adsk/servlet/pc/index?siteID=452932&id=14844126

This looks the important bit
Intel Pentium 4 or AMD Athlon dual-core processor, 3.0 GHz or higher with SSE2 technology
1 GB RAM
1.4 GB free disk space for installation

Whats SSE2 Technology?

I want something that will keep him going for a while.

Would something like this be about right http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-040-OP&groupid=43&catid=1798&subcat=

or would a build be better?

TIA

hi there mate, i am a civil engineer and currently use autocad as well - almost daily

i used to have the e8400 and running autocad was a bit... troublesome

I have now upgraded to the 2500k and ill report when i get autocad set up :)

the main problem is when you want to render or change the view to conceptual the panning is VERY slow and highly fustrating!

i wouldnt take any notice of those minimum specs as yes, you COULD run autocad - but it would be painful to acutally USE it like that!

surely for 3d cad stuff the graphics card would be more important to a point?
wouldnt any decent quadcore be more than enough? with lots of ram?

i dont know only ever used cad stuff in secondary school engineering class's.. lol

Yeah but AutoCAD LT is only 2D so no need for OTT spec. Better going with a bog standard PC and a really fast HDD.

Includes quad core phenom II, 8Gb DDR3, 1 Tb disk, Windows Professional, Graphics card as placeholder, you could get a quadro or similar to replace.

Note, I run LT2004 and LT2011, the latter uses as much ram and processor as possible.
