just opened my newly build pc in a panic after smelling a strong burning smell in my room, found out a few moments later that a window was open and it was the next door neighbor haivng a BBQ (grrr....) so started to put things back togther again, plugged fan in to the correct header and it woudnt turn only very slight red LED's on the fan come on, so unplugged and plugged back in, same problem, moved the wire arround a bit and it came on when wire was bent but went off when let go, so i cable tied the wire it in a slightly bent position and it seemed to do the job, any one know a long term alternative or sould i just leave the tie on? the fan is a: xigmatek crystal 120mm red LED fan and is used on the cases window.

thanks :)

You've possibly bent one of the terminals in the connector and that's why bending the wire restores a good connection.

Have a look at the mating face of the connector and you should see one of the terminals contact raised or at least different to the others.

Use a pin to press down the little barb in the window on the top of the connector and pull the terminal out of thew housing lightly. You should be able to bend the terminal shape back to normal quite easily. By all means extract two terminals so you know how far to bend the terminal back.
