I have some heavy duty editing to do over the next few days so would like to setup my monitor as best I can. I don't have a device to help me so I'm looking for guidance on how to do it manually for the best results.

I'll be using lightroom 4 on my PC.

Any tips or advice would be great.

I've always used a completely random method :D

I'll take a series of photos in my house and immediately compare them on the monitors I have (PC, Laptop, ipad, etc). As long as they match what I'm seeing I know it's fine (ignoring the ipad, iphone as they look totally different due to retina display)

I realise it sounds like madness, but it's worked for 10 years :D

That being said, if you've got problems with eyesight, seeing colours, etc, this method obviously won't work. There is a calibration site out there somewhere that people always post in these threads, and for what it's worth, my crazy method always gets the same results :)
