Calibration Gadgets

I use an Xrite i1Display Pro and yes very much essential I'd say if you're doing photo editing etc.

If it's just gaming that you use the monitor for then it's not worth it really.
 
I would say that even if the usage is unrelated to the pro image work, depending on the state of the monitor (crap factory colours/gamma/contrast/white point) the calibration could make a pleasant difference.
You can rent the i1 for 20-40 £/€/$ to play for a couple of days (or even buy and return if the results are not worth it), so not big of a risk if you decide to try it for yourself.

Local photostudios might do that, in my city there is (or at least was) one where you could even bring your display for the process (cheaper), I've seen a couple of places online too, and a few people who rent theirs. I'm not from UK though.

What new return rules? Do they apply to the 15-day-minimum-no-questions-asked thing? But even with a fee it might cost less than a rental.
 
yeah, I asked because in the UK I can't find anywhere that rents them

and yes, whilst you have 14 days to cancel and return something, you can now only inspect as you would in a shop, so a lot of places are charging restocking fees if something is obviously opened and used and can't be resold as new
