Calibration tool?

Anyone suggest a half decent monitor calibration tool, fairly simple and to the point?
My own efforts to calibrate my screen are yielding very questionable results.

X-Rite i1 Display Pro all the way for me. A lot better than the Spyder I had before and you can pick up Calman at some point to calibrate your TV later on if you want to.

After endless tweaking on my X34, I am now interested in buying a tool for the job but would like something that could calibrate my TVs too as it would justify the purchase for me.

I take it the X-rite can't do both?

Are the spyder calibrators any good? How do they work, do they change the colour of the monitor them selves? Does it help with printer to monitor calibration?

Yes but you need a laptop or pc and 3rd party software which is free called HCFR, plus a set of test patterns burned to DVD. Apart from the laptop or pc all the stuff you need is free for download off the internet. I've calibrated tv's, projectors and monitors.

Sorry to get a bit necro here, but I've got some funds to allocate to a decent calibration tool (see quoted txt). As previously, I'd like something that can calibrate my TV's as well as my PC monitors. Although, I would settle for something to calibrate monitors only if need be.

What's the recommendation? I honestly have no idea about calibration tools, but would like to get the best from my screens.
