I was reading a recent issue of PCGamer, and I remember them mentioning something about calibrating your monitor, since by default the colours can be off? Is this just a load of rubbish, or does it help?
Google has a ton of stuff, but I don't have a clue where to begin, which methods are best, and so on.

So, are any of the free tools worthwhile, and which one is good to use? I don't do any photo or video editing, but I do game a lot.

read and be enlightened. Not really of any use though unless you are doing any colour critical work, definitely not for gaming as unless your monitor has a programmable Look Up Table (LUT) the graphics card LUT that these units rewrite gets undone by the custom ones loaded by most modern games.
