Hi,

I'm considering buying this but have heard that it has some major gameplay flaws like at times being very unforgiving, timed sections and check-points which you have to replay over and over again when you die.

Those that have played it, what did you think?

Edit : Should have added that I was also curious whether the graphics would hold up reasonably well for an old game like this. Really need a new game.

It's a straight port of an xbox game pretty much, so even at release the gfx were never outstanding, but if you like creepy games with atmosphere then look no further. It's one of those games you play with the lights off and headphones on :o

Search the official forums for this as someone wrote a superb free mod utility which enables a lot of cool stuff to help with the tricky sections as well as unearth hidden code to change the game slightly (things like a hand to open doors).

Game is superb on atmosphere & in places still has some jaw dropping moments they should remake in HD it would still sell well to the survival horror crowd.

^^ The effects of consoles rubbing off on you; stupidity. :p

People forget that stuff has been 'HD' on PC since what, 2001? (earlier probably)

Maybe he means the texture resolutions since this game was made with a maximum of 256x256 as far as I remember. (my mate did the shadow and lighting textures for it)

My PCs monitor in 1998 could support what's now referred to as 720p.

Sounds interesting. What's the mod called?

Cheers. I got to the hotel escape sequence, and after a dozen failed attempts, switched it off, and never went back. I would like to, though. Great atmosphere.

Walking around Innsmouth atm (or however you spell it) and yes, the atmosphere is good. I found it quite eerie as I got out of the car, a chap just walked up quite near to where I was standing, creepy or what?! :)

Outstanding game. It is a bit unforgiving in parts, but unforgiving isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's been a few years since I last played it, so I'm due another go, and I'm probably going to get it on steam myself.
It's got atmosphere in spades, and I loved the overall look of the game, despite what people may say about the graphics. I think it's minor flaws are far outweighed by the things it does very well.

Looks like there is a lot of nerve jangling moments awaiting me. :D

It does look like they have made a very fine effort with development. Nice touches here and there.

Loved the game, call me a wimp if you must but I nearly **** my self at parts of the game !

Like others, I'm now thinking of loading it up again

Thanks for the links, AWPC. :) After having played through vanilla I'll take a good look at those.

Something I've taken quite a bit of time to realise and appreciate, are mods for games. The longevity it breathes into the games, whatever they may be...Deus Ex, Stalker, System Shock 2 etc.. make it so refreshing. My 'intray' of games is stacking up! :D
