Call of Duty 1 problems

I've purchased Call of Duty 1 from the Steam sale and I can't get it to work properly in widescreen.

I have managed to get the game working in 1024x768, but I cannot get it to run in widescreen at 1920x1080. I followed various instructions about modifying the config.cfg file, and getting it to run the resolution that way, but each time I go to run the game it won't load, and displays a "Could not load OpenGL" error.

I have searched the net for a fix, but I've only found one thing (which I can't even do anyway because the dll file link has expired everywhere) and that is to use some ati dll file and place it into the Call of Duty folder. Until I can find a new solution this appears to be the only fix.

Is there an alternative fix or am I pretty much screwed?

I wonder if this is because it is the Steam version, sometimes you can replace the .exe with a dodgy nocd .exe and that can make things work. Just a thought, at your own risk as well :)

1024x768 is the maximum that it can run on.

It has worked no problem for me since 2003 until the present day.

No it can be modded to run at a higher res like most games, it has worked in a past version as it has a detailed report. Only thing I can think of is the Steam version is slightly different from retail.

Mine is the retail version and the wsgf instructions have never worked for it.

ok you put this in your mp cfg in cod 1 folder

seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_customheight "1080"
seta r_customwidth "1920"

or adjust for your settings this is for 1920x1080 and makes a big difference

if you have vista or windows 7 and brightness doesnt alter try this

seta r_overBrightBits "1" ---> seta r_overBrightBits "0"

you may need to make the cfg read only as steam may change it back to default if on steam

That's what I've already done, as instructed in the widescreen gaming forum. Unfortunately it does not work.
