That can't be good, surely? This points straight to a CPU bottleneck I think . :(

A64 3200+ @ Stock
x800XlGTO2 OC'd a bit
2Gb RAM (4 x 512mb GEIL value)

I was hoping to get an x1800xt from OCuK but if my CPU isn't even up to the job of an x800 there's no use. Is this the case?

Thanks for any help.

All games use 100% CPU usuage even if old games such as CS 1.6 etc. Just because its at 100% doesnt mean its poiting to a bottleneck. People with dual cores will be getting 40-60% usage as most games arent optimized for dual core yet!

Not neccessarily by CoD2, it could be spy/adware or anything like that. Check your system processes, run spybot and a virus scanner.

99% Usage does not mean your CPU isn't up to the job, it just means that your CPU is doing something almost every clock.

Also: if you're pressing Ctrl Alt Del while running the game, it will jump to 100% load while it switches between the game and windows.

When running iTunes/FF/MSN I get 4%~ so no Spyware/Adware etc.

That sounds much better than I thought! I was hoping that it wouldn't be a Bottleneck. Thanks for the info.

So I'm not likely to get a Bottleneck with an X1800Xt then?

Depends on the game and resolution really :p Im not sure abot COD2 though but with source games you would bottlenecked

I can't remember a game that dosn't use 100% of one core, most full screen games will take up evey clock they can just doing control loops no matter how old.

All games take up over 90% of CPU time on ANY CPU (except multi-cores if the games isnt multi-threaded).

Your system is fine...

Any programme, including games, that can use 100% of the cpu will. The only reason you see people using 50% is because their system is dual core and only one of the cores is being used. This is because the programme/game has not been optimized to run dual cores.

P4's with Hyperthreading also display the 45-55% utilization during gaming as well, as they emulate dual core. So when comparing CPU load, only bother comparing with other AMD Single core users.

100% CPU load in a game is actually desireable. It means the game, rather than windows is managing the cpu. Even if the game is simply putting the cpu into a hlt state, as part of speed control logic.

americas army 2.6.0 doesn't take my CPU usage above 50%, quake 4 uses 65% last time i checked, both run perfectly without any stuttering

Edit: and i don't have dual core processor, i have athlon 64 3200+

That cpu is definately a bottleneck ;)
I had that cpu and used to get about 300fps in COD2 now swapped over to Intel E6600 and get 600-1000fps with the same gfx card.

Also used to be 99% usage now only 50%

AMD's are officially poo now =D
