Managing to play Crysis, CSS, UT etc all absolutely fine, however COD4 is deciding it likes to crash every 30-60mins without warning. It is sometimes possible to ctrl+alt+del out of it, but rarely. Getting quite frustrating. I have updated it, turned off xfire, even tried the latest nvidia beta drivers, does anyone have any other ideas? 'Cause I'm clean out.

This is in Multiplayer btw, spec in sig.

EDIT: Clean Windows XP SP2 install too.

Ill be the first to say that neither this or crysis like overclocked systems very much.

My machine will play everything else and run orthos all day at 3Ghz+ but try and play either of these two and it just waves the white flag and goes home.

My system is not overclocked, only the GFX which is OC'd by BFG. I also remember, this was crashing the same with my logitech USB headset on, different drivers yes?

This maybe is indicating it is not the sound.

Yes, the sound loops for a while, then it might stop, and loop some more. Then i might lose it all together.

Is this significant?

You using an form of overclocking tool such as ATI tool or rivatuner? Both have known issues with punkbuster and i find that i get the lockup and looping sound when i have these enabled. Its really annoying

my system is overlocked and am playin cod 4 just fine with lastest foreware beta's and the most recent XFI drivers and ive not got a prob everythin maxed and 1440x900 i know not a big res but new screen planned for xmas. also graphics card overclocked using revatuner 2.06

It certainly could be. Read cremeegg's reply for the reason why. I was having the same problem with BF2.

Yeah i heard ntune can also be a problem, so i have uninstalled that. I have now removed everything from startup except the logtiech processes for my mouse and so far no crash. Also making sure im using headphones. I'm going to slowly fade all the processes back in...

Messenger, then iTunes, then my on-board sound etc. See what's causing the problem.

I'll let you know when i get a decent answer. Thanks for the timely responses.

I had this for a while. I deleted all my sound files using a driver cleaner and then reinstalled from the disk that came with the soundcard (X-Fi Gamer). Its been a week now without a repeat so I havent bothered to update the drivers. I also removed the drivers for the onboard sound even though it was off.

I get it in Bf2, Cod 2 and 4 mainly, but also in other games as the punkbuster processes run even when you have quit COD4! I have to ensure that for a non punkbuster game i kill all the processes relating to PB before i can play with overclocking.
Its been an issue for ages, seems some people get it others dont, and PB have done sod all about it!

Ok, im yet to run any more processes. All i have is my logitech mouse and windows live messenger running and its still crashing. This game does not want to run! Ive tried everything, i love the game but its so frustrating, argh!!

I had a prob with cod4 locking my pc up completely requiring a hard reboot

turned out to be my audigy2 as I have removed it and uninstalled so may well be sound drivers as it now runs solid with onboard sound

new games always = new problems grrrr

ok, the strangest of things. Managed to recover my vista disk, installed cod4, no crash, which kind of makes sense due to it using different drivers (plus tis 64-bit) hwoever i have noticed a lot less frames in vista than in XP. Also task manager shows cod4 running using about 1Gig of my 2gig of ram! Is that normal, do you think lack of ram is a cause of loss of frames?

OK, due to the lack of frames, i added another 2 gig (now 4gb) of ram and reinstalled vista. I spent all afternoon doing this, due to the fact both my board and vista did not like 4gb.

Just started playing cod, both single and multiplayer crashed with sound loop, with vista generic sound drivers. latest nvidia drivers installed, xfire off etc.

Exactly the same symptoms. The first time it said display drivers had stopped responding or something along those lines. The bsod said something about nvlddmkm.sys and 0x00000116 error code.

Memory has been tested, all ok. Latest non-beta nvidia drivers, soon to try beta also.

I'm getting tired of this.

As mentioned previously, this sounds very much like Punkbuster conflicting with a 3rd party app. I had this same issue when I had systool running in the background. At the IW forums there is a thread about this issue, and they have said many other apps including atitool and rivatuner can also cause this issue.

Have you tried joining a non-PB server?

Yes i have, still crashes, also crashing in Single Player :/

So many people suffering with this issue, its unlikely to be punkbuster. Vista tells me my display driver has stopped responding, which although is not conclusive, it indicates the display driver is the cause.

Massive threads in the nvidia forums discussing it, apparently can be related to not getting enough voltage to ram and NB.
