problem : cod4 crashes/freezes for about 2-3minutes then pc restarts itself.

specs:

amd athlon 3200+
ATI x1650 pro 512mb AGP
768mb ram ( 1x 512 1x 256mb )
Windows XP
Direct x 9
1.4 call of duty patch

ive tried re installing the game multiple times / tried setting the sound performance to basic / downloading new + old drivers for my video card / using diff versions off direct x and i still have this problem!

any one could help to resolve this issue?

Does it only happen with cod or in other games as well, if it's only cod, is it single player, multiplayer or both ?

Try closing as many non essential processes (via task manager) as possible, and choose yes to run the game in safe mode when it asks, as it could be something as simple as your settings been to high.

Tbh the reason you've not had many replies is becouse the problem could be down to a number of different reasons, ie hardware, temp issues, punkbuster, corrupt windows install, corrupt video drivers and/or game files, a dodgy patch install, etc.

Don't know if you've read the thread below, if not then it's well worth a read in your situation, plus you'll probably get more help posting there since it's the official forum.

I had random hard locks only in multiplayer and only on Cod4. I turned off AA & AF in the graphics options and only had 1 crash in a week.

I can play Crysis, Unreal, Cod 4 single player but for some reason it's only multiplayer. My rig is Quad Core 68xx, 8800GTX etc and doesnt have issues with anything else.

I've noticed when the game (multiplayer) loads up you get weird pauses before the menu's and going into games seems hit/miss (sometimes have to restart the game to get in). I put it down to buggy s/w not my PC tbh.

Try some of the solutions listed here
(I've given up trying to run it on an old athlon 3000+ machine...)

I cannot run iw3mp.exe / iw3sp.exe it errors with 'iw3xx.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close'
There are a number of possible reasons for this happening:
Some onboard soundcards - Start ->Control panel -> Sounds and audio devices-> options -> properties. Pick Recording and then turn stereo mix ON.
Realtek onboard soundcards - Make sure you are using the newest drivers available. Some have reported that having a mic plugged in can fix this problem.
Realtek onboard soundcards - Sometimes disabling / enabling these can make it work (even if you dont use them for sound)
Realtek onboard soundcards and vista - Sometimes uninstalling the realtek driver and letting vista find its own works.
AthlonXP and Sempron (not 64bit) - Go into the cod4/miles folder and rename 'mssmp3.asi' to 'mssmp3.bak'. The miles sound system included is known to have issues with 32bit processors. NOTE: This will disable ambient music in the game. An alternative mssmp3.asi can be found Here! so you can have music.
As always if you have problems, Try to update all drivers (motherboard, soundcard, graphics card) to the newest available. Most can be found at your motherboard manufacturers website ( www.asus.com www.msi.com.tw www.via.com.tw www.gigabyte.com.tw etc.)

mines done it a few times - was overheating i think, dont have that problem now im in my cold cold uni flat again though, lol.

Could also try this:

Right click on my computer > properties > advanced > startup and recovery > settings > and uncheck "automatically restart".

Now the next time your pc goes to restart it will give you a blue screen with an error message instead. Write it down and post here what it says.

Also, just to clarify, did you test it with just the 512mb stick of memory installed or not ?

Punkbuster causes computers to freeze/crash. Quit any programs like MSN/Xfire.

Also Rivatuner, ATI Tools, etc. My MP will just crash if I have those programs installed. (they don't even have to be running - just having them installed without even changing a single setting is enough to crash my games)
