Hey
Well after a year or so of having this on 360 I thought I'd go out and buy it on PC today just to pass the time until Modern Warfare 2. I installed the game and am now in the process of downloading the latest patch. While the patch was downloading I went and had a go at Single Player which worked fine and looks very pretty. Multiplayer however kept going to a black screen and would then crash to the desktop giving me an error message saying "iw3mp.exe has stopped responding" I tried launching again, still didn't work, so I scoured the net and hopefully this will help somebody even though the game is almost 2 years old.
If you experience this error and an inability to play or even load multiplayer and you have on board sound (Realtek) then you simply have to double click the Realtek tray icon, click on the small folder that appears in the top right, put a check in the box that says "disable front panel jack detection" and then the game should run. If it doesn't just make sure you've ticked "set default device" in the digital output tab also.
Anyway, just thought I'd put this fix down in the hope that it might help somebody sometime.
